San Jose >> The San Jose Sharks recalled defenseman Luca Cagnoni, one of the AHL’s top scoring defensemen, from the San Jose Barracuda on Tuesday.

Cagnoni, listed at 5-foot-9, 180 pounds, has been an offensive dynamo in the AHL this season. In his first year of professional hockey, he has scored 47 points, including 34 assists, in 56 games with the Barracuda. Nine of his 13 goals this season have come on the power play.

During Tuesday’s practice, the left-shot Cagnoni was paired with righty Vincent Desharnais, who is listed at 6-foot-7 and 226 pounds. Desharnais was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 5 for a 2028 fifth-round draft pick.

The 20-year-old Cagnoni, a native of Burnaby, British Columbia, was the Sharks’ fourth-round draft choice in 2023. In his last season with the Portland Winterhawks, He scored 90 points in just 65 regular-season games, becoming the first WHL defenseman in over 30 years to record at least 90 points in a season.

After signing his entry-level contract with the Sharks in May of last year, Cagnoni said his goal was to become professional this season rather than return to junior hockey. He was eligible to return to Portland, but since he turned 20 in December, he was also eligible to join the Barracuda. CHL players had to be 20 by Dec. 31 of last year to be eligible to play in the AHL.

Cagnoni turned heads with four points in four preseason games with the Sharks, then got off to a blistering offensive start in the AHL, with 18 points in his first 18 games with the Barracuda.
