City event celebrates first EV refuse truck

The city of Santa Cruz welcomes the community to celebrate the first EV refuse truck in Santa Cruz County with a ribbon cutting from 12:15-12:45 p.m. Thursday at the Santa Cruz City Hall courtyard, 809 Center. St., Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley will host the event with other government officials, industry representatives and regulators.

Kevin McGary to address Republican women

Kevin McGary, founder of the organization “Every Black Life Matters” will be the guest speaker at the Santa Cruz Republican Women’s monthly luncheon at noon Tuesday at Seascape Golf Course, 610 Clubhouse Drive, in Aptos.

“Every Black Life Matters” states that its goal is to counteract the emerging violence and poverty in under-served, mostly Black urban communities. The organization is seen as an alternative to Black Lives Matter.

City’s Fourth of July parade in the works

The city of Scotts Valley will host its annual Fourth of July Parade on July 4 along Scotts Valley Drive, according to a release from the city.

Parade entry forms and sponsorship information will be coming soon to the city’s website. If you’re interested in participating in the parade, call 831-483-3251 or email rec@scottsvalley.gov.

The city is not hosting the fireworks portion of the event this year. But the city welcomes any community group that would like to take the lead on a similar event, according to the release. For information, call 831-440-5600.

‘Researching your Ancestry’ starts March 3

The Scotts Valley Senior Center is sponsoring a “Researching Your Ancestry” course from 11 a.m. to noon starting March 3 at the center, 370 Kings Village Road, Scotts Valley or on Zoom.

The other days for the eight-session course include: March 10, March 17, March 31, April 7, April 14, April 21 and May 5.

The cost of the course is $100 in advance.

At the end of the course, students will be prepared to carry out their own family history research. Student participation is encouraged.

‘Legally Blonde’ takes to stage in March

The San Lorenzo Valley Theatre Department presents “Legally Blonde The Musical” with seven performances from March 3-12 at the SLV Performing Arts Center, 7105 Highway 9, Felton.

The musical comedy is directed by Daria E. Troxell, with music and vocal direction by Nicki Kerns. Performances are 7 p.m. March 3, March 4, March 10, March 11 and at 2 p.m. for matinees March 5 and March 12 with a special Community Night performance at 7 p.m. March 9.

Advance tickets are available online via hs.slvusd.org. A limited number of tickets will be available to purchase at the door one hour prior to showtime.

“Legally Blonde The Musical” is rated PG-13. Some content may not be appropriate for younger audience members. It is based on the MGM film starring Reese Witherspoon.

Ticket prices are $20 for general admission and $15 for seniors, students and SLV staff. For the March 9 community night performance only, all tickets are $15.

Suicide prevention conference returns March 10

The 25th Annual Jon E. Nadherny/Calciano Memorial Youth Symposium presents a live, in-person educational conference starting at 8:15 a.m. March 10 at the Cocoanut Grove in Santa Cruz, 400 Beach St., in Santa Cruz.

This year’s symposium is titled “Youth Suicide: Updates on Risk & Prevention, Recovery & Resilience” and will feature Dr. Christine Moutier and DeQuincy Meiffren-Lezine as well as presentations from a panel of local experts. This all-day event has been approved for six hours of continuing education credit for applicable professionals and is open to the general public.

Registration open for Safe Driver classes

AARP Safe Driver classes are open in Santa Cruz and Watsonville. The classes are designed to help maturing drivers maintain safe driving skills and thus their licenses for a longer period of time.

California insurance companies are required by law to give a discount for three years to seniors (age 55 and older) who complete this class. Regular classes are eight hours and normally divided into two days of four hours each. Refresher classes are four hours in length. Registration is recommended as drop-ins may find the class is full and thus be turned away.

The class fee is $25 per person and $20 per person for AARP members. The class is free for those with their Medicare supplement with AARP’s United Health. You must bring your card.
