Frederic John Nunes, beloved and respected member of the Sonoma County community, passed away peacefully March 31, 2026, at the age of 78.

Fred was born in San Francisco, California, and raised in Salinas, where he developed his lifelong work ethic helping his father (Edward Nunes) farm. He served his country as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, earning the Silver Star among other medals. Following his military service, Fred built a distinguished career as a firefighting helicopter pilot with California Department of Forestry (CDF).

In retirement, Fred turned his passion back to the land. Together with his wife, Wendy, he founded Nunes Vineyard in the Russian River Valley on his grandfather’s (Frederic Muzio) 43-acre ranch. Fred liked to say, “If it’s not fun, we’re not doing it right.”

He is survived by his wife, Wendy Fowler Nunes; his daughter, Tamara Nunes (husband Jae Lee); granddaughter Laurel Lee; brother, Ed Nunes; nephew, Tracy Nunes; sister in law, Melissa Fowler Janes (children, Trent and Keegan); cousin, Darius Mostowfi (wife, Denise and children, Sam and Erin); and the broader Nunes family and friends.

Fred left a lasting impression on everyone he met with his larger-than-life energy, his generous heart, and unique personality. He was known as a total character and will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in memory of Frederic John Nunes to Redwood Empire Food Bank ~ https://refb.org
