Lamphere has life in the MAC Gold Division volleyball race.

Caryss Terry made a season-high 24 kills and added nine digs Wednesday night to lead the Rams to a five-set victory over Warren Woods-Tower that reshaped the championship picture with little more than a week left in the regular season.

Faith Stinson added 13 digs and two kills as visiting Lamphere took a 25-19, 17-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13 win that dropped Warren Woods-Tower from first place and left both teams with three losses in division play.

“This was a ‘must’ win,” Rams coach Casey McLellan said. “If we had lost, we would have had no shot at the league title. We’re still kind of on the back end of it, but I’d rather be in the hunt than not.”

Lamphere improved to 6-3 with one match remaining, next Wednesday against new leader Marine City (6-2).

“We all locked in,” Terry said. “We were all connected in a way. We knew what we wanted.”

Warren Woods-Tower fell to 5-3. The Titans play Roseville next Wednesday and Marine City the following week.

“It’s anybody’s game right now,” Titans coach Aaron Nitz said. “It’s going to be a fun finish.”

Nitz congratulated Terry on her performance.

“Amazing defense tonight,” he told the senior middle blocker.

Terry had two kills to help the Rams build an 8-0 lead in the fifth set, and her kill gave the Madison Heights team an 11-3 lead.

“She played offense and defense, just athletic plays, one-handed digs,” Nitz said. “When the game was on the line, she wasn’t afraid to be the one.”

Payton Robinson served eight consecutive points as Warren Woods-Tower rallied to take a 12-11 lead in the final set.

But Lamphere got four of the next five points and clinched the victory when a Titans return was too long.

“We got down 8-0; you don’t usually come back from that, but they did,” Nitz said. “I told my girls I’m proud of the way they finished. A lot of teams would have given up.”

The victory gave Lamphere a split of the season series.

“You had to stay in it the whole time,” McLellan said. “You weren’t able to take a few points off. Even when we did take the (8-0) lead in the fifth, we let them back in. But that’s volleyball.

“They can be a little streaky at times. What they did tonight was really fight. They didn’t get down on themselves. That was good to see.”

Terry served four consecutive points as Lamphere built a 12-2 lead in the fourth set. Terry’s one-handed return with her back to the net found the floor for a 19-16 lead, and kills by Alyiah Hill and Ava Tagai, who finished with five kills apiece, helped the Rams take a 21-19 lead before they closed out the set.

Abby Pendell’s kill gave Warren Woods-Tower a 24-22 lead in the third set, which ended when the Rams couldn’t return Eisa Lautenbach’s serve.

An ace by Jacqueline Asmar, one of four seniors honored before playing their final league home game for the Titans, gave WWT a 21-15 lead in the second set.

Ella Good, April Williams and Ashley Childs were the other seniors honored.

Last year, Lamphere won the Silver Division championship before moving during realignment.
