City receives federal funding toward road safety

U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Lafayette, has announced that funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law was allocated to Boulder, as well as two other Colorado communities, to help prevent traffic related deaths and serious injuries.

Boulder will receive $473,600 for its Vision Zero Action Plan. Vision Zero is the city’s goal to reduce the number of traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries to zero.

“With traffic fatalities in Boulder County trending in the wrong direction, we are very excited about the safety work that this funding is going to make possible,” Alex Hyde-Wright, Boulder County Regional Multimodal Planning Division Manager, said in a written statement.

Input sought on future of city’s airport

Boulder is seeking feedback on the future of the Boulder Municipal Airport through a new Airport Community Conversation project.

Participation options include a Community Working Group and upcoming open houses and online questionnaires. The city plans to collaborate with the working group to create a range of possible scenarios for the airport’s future.

To apply to the working group, go to the project page at bouldercolorado.gov/projects/airport-community-conversation. Applications are due Feb. 28.

The broader Boulder community can share their input during future open houses and online questionnaires. The first open house is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. March 15 at the airport. Details will be published on the project webpage this spring.

Coroner IDs woman killed in crash on Colo. 93

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office has identified the 31-year-old Denver woman who was killed Tuesday morning in a four-vehicle crash on Colo. 93 as Melissa Schumacher.

New details have also emerged about the crash, which was reported at 9:11 a.m. Tuesday near mile marker 15 on Colo. 93.

According to Master Trooper Gary Cutler of the Colorado State Patrol, Schumacher was driving a 2017 Chevy Equinox northbound on Colo. 93. The vehicle crossed over the double yellow lines, sideswiped a 2019 Nissan NV200 van that was going southbound and rolled “an unknown number of times,” Cutler said.

The Chevy then sideswiped a southbound 2012 Toyota Prius before colliding head-on with a southbound 2021 Tesla. Schumacher died after being taken to the hospital, according to Cutler.

Meanwhile, the Tesla driver, a 50-year-old woman from Superior, sustained serious injuries, while the Nissan driver had minor injuries. Cutler said the driver of the Toyota was taken to the hospital, but was uninjured. A passenger in the Toyota also was not injured.

Cutler said he believed drugs may have been a factor in this crash. The coroner is continuing to investigate Schumacher’s cause and manner of death.

Colo. 93 was closed Tuesday between Greenbriar Boulevard and Eldorado Springs Drive until about 12:40 p.m. All four vehicles were towed from the scene.
