After helping four different women’s basketball programs reach the NCAA Tournament as an associate head coach and assistant coach, Jonas Chatterton will try to guide San Jose State to the Big Dance for the first time in the program’s history.
SJSU announced Friday that Chatterton has been hired as the 11th head coach in school history.
Chatterton has 27 seasons of coaching experience, including stints at BYU, Colorado, Oregon State and Oklahoma. In all, Chatterton’s teams have produced a cumulative record of 501-237, a .679 winning percentage. His teams reached the NCAAs 13 times and won four conference championships.
This is his first head coaching job.
Chatterton succeeds April Phillips, who was not retained after going 23-71 in three seasons. The Spartans were 10-22 last season, their highest win total in five years, but went 3-15 in Mountain West play and tied for last place.
SJSU has finished with a winning record just once in the past 20 seasons, a 19-12 finish in 2019-20 under Jamie Craighead Turner.
Chatterton was the Sooners’ associate head coach last season, playing a key role in program strategy, recruiting, and athlete performance. The Sooners advanced to the Sweet 16 this past season, falling to eventual national champion UConn.

After enjoying the most productive season in San Jose Barracuda history, forward Andrew Poturalski was named the winner of the Les Cunningham Award as the AHL’s most valuable player for the 2024-25 season.
Despite missing the final three weeks of the regular season with a lower-body injury, Poturalski, 31, led the AHL with 73 points in 59 games, helping the Barracuda to their first Calder Cup playoff appearance since 2019.
Poturalski has missed the last 10 games, including the Barracuda’s 2-0 win over the Ontario Reign in Game 1 of their best-of-three opening-round series at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Thursday.
The Barracuda can advance to the Pacific Division semifinals with one more win over the Reign tonight in Los Angeles or Monday in Ontario.
This is the first MVP award for Poturalski, who also has three AHL scoring titles and two Calder Cup championships. Poturalski set new Barracuda franchise records for points and goals (30) this season.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Jaden Rashada, one of the faces of the Name, Image and Likeness phenomenon when he left Pittsburg High School three years ago, has found another college home.
The former four-star quarterback prospect, who spent last season on the sidelines at the University of Georgia, posted on his Instagram account he is moving on to Sacramento State.
Rashada has played in only three college games, in 2023 at Arizona State, completing 44 of 82 passes for 485 yards and four touchdowns with three interceptions.
Before arriving at Arizona State, he had committed to Miami, then flipped to Florida.
He signed a national letter of intent with Florida in December 2022 but then reversed course when an NIL deal reportedly worth millions didn’t materialize.
He then signed with Arizona State, where his dad, Harlen, played defensive back in the early 1990s.
A knee injury sidelined Rashada for much of the 2023 season at ASU. A few months later, Rashada was on the move again, signing with powerhouse Georgia. He did not play in any games for the Bulldogs and still has three years of eligibility.

Alijah Arenas, the USC basketball recruit who was involved in a fiery vehicle accident, is out of an induced coma, his family said in a statement.
The 18-year-old Arenas remains intubated, his family told ESPN, but has “shown significant signs of progress within the last 24 hours.”
The Los Angeles Police Department said officers responded shortly before 5 a.m. Thursday to single-vehicle collision in the Reseda area of the San Fernando Valley. The LA Fire Department further said the vehicle was a Tesla Cybertruck that crashed into a tree and a fire hydrant with fire involved.
The family said Arenas remembered the smoke from the crash and wrote to ask, “Did anyone get hurt?”
Arenas is a son of former Warriors standout Gilbert Arenas.
