Helen Henderson Fleischman, 89, passed away on February 25, 2025, after a long fight with cancer. She was born in Waynesboro, VA to Martha Woody and Jack Henderson, the fourth of five daughters. Helen was senior class president at Waynesboro High School. She went on to attend two years of college in West Virginia and Virginia. Helen completed her interrupted bachelor’s degree through Regis College, Denver, in 1988.

Waiting until her three daughters had finished their collegiate education, it was a proud day when she graduated cum laude.

Helen met her future husband, Herbert Fleischman, while waitressing at a local restaurant. It led to a job as office secretary for Herb’s company before marriage in 1956. Herb’s work opportunities took them to Turkey, New York, Greece, Israel, and Colorado. Eventually Aurora became home base. Helen embraced many cultures, making friends everywhere. She enjoyed hiking, tennis, skiing, reading, jigsaw puzzles, cryptograms, politics, and card games.

Helen rejoined the workforce with time.

Working primarily in banking, she also served as president of the Denver Safe Deposit Association and became a Toastmaster Club president.

Ten years after her beloved Herb died, Helen married Erick Ahonen, a long-time family friend. They settled into retirement, with hiking and travel among their pursuits.

Helen is survived by her younger sister, Shelvia Duncan (Ronnie), by her daughters, Roslyn (Rob Jackson), Barbara Beckmann (Bill), and Sandra Brand (Carey), five stepchildren, thirteen grandchildren, and two greatgrandchildren.

Helen was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, sister, and friend that will be forever missed.

A celebration of life will be held later in March.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the ASPCA.
