Oklahoma’s Raegan Beers is AP player of the week

Former Valor Christian star Raegan Beers, now at Oklahoma has been named The Associated Press women’s basketball player of the week.

The Oregon State transfer shot 70.4% for the week and became the first Sooners player in 16 seasons to have back-to-back games over 20 points and 14 rebounds. Her 26-point effort against Virginia put her over 1,000 career points in just her 63rd game.

USC gets 1 year probation, $50K fine for violating NCAA coaching staff rules

LOS ANGELES>> Southern California’s football program has been fined $50,000 and placed on probation for one year by the NCAA because of multiple violations of coaching staff rules over two seasons. The NCAA and USC announced Tuesday they reached a settlement in the case.

An NCAA investigation found that USC exceeded the allowed number of countable coaches during the 2022 season along with spring practices in 2023. Eight analysts did on- and off-field coaching during that period, exceeding the permissible number by six.

Wander Franco charged with illegally carrying gun

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic>> Dominican Republic prosecutors say Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco was charged with illegally carrying a gun in his vehicle during the altercation in a parking lot that led to his arrest over the weekend.

The attorney general’s office in the Dominican Republic said Tuesday in a statement that police found a Glock pistol with a 15-round magazine inside the Mercedes Benz that Franco was driving during what police called an altercation over a woman’s attention. Authorities said the gun was registered to Franco’s uncle.

Canada fires Priestman over Olympic drone scandal

Canada women’s soccer coach Bev Priestman has been fired after an independent review of a drone surveillance scandal at the Paris Olympics. Assistant coach Jasmine Mander and analyst Joseph Lombardi were also fired as Canada Soccer released findings of the investigation.

New Zealand complained about a drone flying over practices before the start of the Olympic tournament, prompting FIFA to fine Canada Soccer $228,000 and strip six standings points from the team.

Sinner beats Fritz again; Medvedev in contention

TURIN, Italy >> Top-ranked Jannik Sinner has made it two wins in two matches before his home fans at the ATP Finals by beating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in a rematch of the U.S. Open final.

Daniil Medvedev moved back into contention with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Alex de Minaur during which he didn’t face a single break point.

Olympic champion Gable Steveson ends retirement

Wrestler Gable Steveson, who won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, is coming out of retirement. Steveson will compete for the University of Minnesota for a fifth and final season.

He won gold as a freestyle heavyweight in Tokyo at age 21, then won his second national title at Minnesota in 2022 before retiring. Now 24, he returns on a 52-match win streak in college wrestling. During his retirement, Steveson tried professional wrestling and even tried out for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.
