A rabid bat was found in Will County for the second time this year, officials said.

A woman found the dead bat Tuesday near her home on Aberdeen Road in Frankfort, Will County Health Department officials said. Local animal control workers took the bat and it later tested positive for the rabies virus, officials said.

The home’s residents confirmed that neither they nor the two dogs at the home were exposed to the bat and the dogs are up to date with their rabies vaccines, officials said.

In 2018, there were 19 confirmed rabid bats found in Will County, officials said.

If a bat is found, it should be removed and people should not touch it, officials said.

Any bat discovered in Will County should be immediately reported to Will County Animal Control by calling 815-462-5633, officials said.
