The Chicago White Sox have a new manager, a slightly tweaked new name for their ballpark and changes to their rotation with Garrett Crochet traded to Boston.

The Chicago Cubs will have a different look in their outfield after acquiring Kyle Tucker in a trade with the Houston Astros and sending Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees.

That’s just some of the maneuvering this offseason.

With pitchers and catchers set to report to camps for spring training in less than a month, here’s a closer look at some of the major moves for teams in the American League and National League Central divisions.

AL Central

White Sox: New manager Will Venable was asked during the winter meetings in December how he’d quantify success in 2025 for a team coming off a modern-day major-league record 121 losses.

“Obviously wins and losses matter, and we’ll all be judged on that,” he said. “I think also it’s about our players and did we support them to get better? Did they get better and continue to develop?

“Then did we do the things internally with our infrastructure and our systems and processes to set us up for success in the future too? There’s a lot of work being done behind the scenes. So I think all those are fair measures of our success.”

Venable takes over a club that’s continuing its rebuild.

The White Sox dealt ace Crochet to the Red Sox on Dec. 11 for four prospects who were ranked among the top 15 in Boston’s minor-league system, including catcher Kyle Teel and outfielder Braden Montgomery.

The White Sox added a lefty to their staff on Jan. 8, signing veteran Martín Pérez to a one-year deal. They also signed right-hander Bryse Wilson, who has experience as a starter and in the bullpen, to a one-year contract and traded for reliever Cam Booser in another deal with the Red Sox.

Infielder Josh Rojas will provide versatility, while Mike Tauchman and Austin Slater give the Sox outfield depth. All three players agreed to one-year deals. The Sox also traded for catcher Matt Thaiss from the Cubs for cash consideration.

They’ll all call Rate Field home now that the “Guaranteed” portion was dropped from the ballpark’s name.

Cleveland Guardians: The 2024 AL Central champions had a hole at first base — briefly.

The Guardians sent first baseman Josh Naylor to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Dec. 21. They later reunited with first baseman Carlos Santana, signing the veteran to a one-year deal.

Santana returns for his third stint with Cleveland, having played there from 2010-17 and again from 2019-20. During his tenures with the franchise, Santana earned an All-Star selection and the AL Silver Slugger Award in 2019.

The Guardians, who reached the AL Championship Series last year where they fell to the New York Yankees in five games, made another change in the infield by trading Gold Glove second baseman Andrés Giménez to the Toronto Blue Jays on Dec. 10.

Detroit Tigers: A second-half surge lifted the Tigers to the postseason for the first time since 2014, where they won a wild-card series against the Houston Astros before losing to the Guardians in the AL Division Series.

The Tigers added a veteran to their pitching staff, signing Alex Cobb to a one-year, $15 million contract on Dec. 10. He spent a portion of 2024 recovering from a left hip injury.

They also agreed to a one-year, $15 million deal with infielder Gleyber Torres on Dec. 27. He slashed .257/.330/.378 with 15 home runs and 63 RBIs for the Yankees in 2024.

Kansas City Royals: The Royals went from 106 losses in 2023 to the postseason in 2024.

Looking to build on the momentum, they were involved in one of the first major trades this offseason by getting infielder Jonathan India and outfielder Joey Wiemer from the Cincinnati Reds for right-handed pitcher Brady Singer on Nov 22. India slashed .248/.357/.392 while playing a career-high 151 games in 2024.

Kansas City brought back pitcher Michael Lorenzen on a one-year deal. The right-hander began 2024 with the Texas Rangers before being dealt to the Royals in July.

He went 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA in seven appearances (six starts) with the Royals, who won their wild-card series against the Baltimore Orioles before losing to the Yankees in the ALDS.

Minnesota Twins: Much of the offseason news surrounding the Twins has focused on the progress of an ownership change.

On the field, they traded pitcher Jovani Morán to the Red Sox for utility player Mickey Gasper on Dec. 25 and acquired catching prospect Diego Cartaya from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Jose Vasquez on Jan. 9.

Gasper went hitless in 18 at-bats during 13 games for the Red Sox in 2024. Cartaya hit .221 with 11 home runs and 52 RBIs for Triple-A Oklahoma City and Double-A Tulsa.

The Twins finished fourth in the AL Central in 2024, with an 82-80 record.

NL Central

Cubs: The Cubs hope to get a power boost by landing Tucker, who has hit at least 23 home runs in each of the last four seasons. They sent third baseman Isaac Paredes, right-hander Hayden Wesneski and 2024 first-round draft pick Cam Smith to Houston on Dec. 13 to acquire the three-time All-Star.

Tucker hit .289 with a .409 on-base percentage and .585 slugging percentage in 78 games during a season that included missing three months because of a fractured shin.

“Obviously to acquire a player like that it comes at a real price, but it’s a price we’re willing to pay, given the fact that was something we felt all summer that we lacked and something we really wanted to bring to this team,” Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer told reporters on Dec. 17.

Less than a week after adding Tucker, the Cubs dealt Bellinger — who was second on the club with 78 RBIs and tied for fourth with 18 home runs in 2024 — to the Yankees for pitcher Cody Poteet. The right-hander went 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA in five games (four starts) during three stints with the Yankees last season.

Other pitching additions for the Cubs include signing lefties Matthew Boyd (two years) and Caleb Thielbar (one year), trading for right-handers Matt Festa (from the Texas Rangers for cash consideration) and Eli Morgan (from the Cleveland Guardians for low-A outfield prospect Alfonsin Rosario) and coming to terms on a one-year deal with right-hander Colin Rea.

The Cubs, who finished tied for second in the NL Central with the St. Louis Cardinals at 83-79 last season, also signed catcher Carson Kelly to a two-year deal on Dec. 8 and traded for infielder Vidal Bruján from the Miami Marlins for infielder Matt Mervis and cash considerations on Dec. 29.

Cincinnati Reds: The Reds made a managerial change coming off a fourth-place finish (77-85), hiring Terry Francona in October.

Francona, who guided the Red Sox to championships in 2004 and 2007 and reached the World Series in 2016 with Cleveland, returns to the dugout after a year away.

The Reds added pitching depth by acquiring Singer from the Royals. He went 9-13 with a 3.71 ERA in 32 starts for Kansas City in 2024.

The Reds will have a new option behind the plate, acquiring catcher Jose Trevino from the Yankees for right-handed reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson on Dec. 20.

They traded for second baseman/outfielder Gavin Lux on Jan. 6. Lux slashed .251/.320/.383 with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs in 139 games for the Dodgers last season.

Milwaukee Brewers: The 2024 NL Central champions will have a new look at the back of their bullpen after sending closer Devin Williams to the Yankees on Dec. 13. They received pitcher Nestor Cortes, infielder Caleb Durbin and cash in return.

Cortes went 9-10 with a 3.77 ERA in 31 games (including a career-high 30 starts) last season.

The Brewers made another deal on Jan. 2, getting pitcher Grant Anderson from the Rangers for pitcher Mason Molina. Anderson had an 8.10 ERA in 23 relief outings for the Rangers in 2024.

The Brewers were the lone NL Central representative in the postseason and lost to the New York Mets in the wild-card round. They lost shortstop Willy Adames, who signed a seven-year, $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Spencer Horwitz was involved in a pair of trades on Dec. 10, eventually ending up with the Pirates.

The Blue Jays sent the first baseman to the Guardians, who later moved him to the Pirates. He hit .265 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs in 97 games for the Blue Jays last season.

Horwitz joins a team that finished last in the NL Central in 2024, with a 76-86 record.

The Pirates made another trade on Dec. 15, picking up infielder/outfielder Enmanuel Valdéz from the Red Sox for minor-league pitcher Joe Vogatsky. Valdéz hit .214 with 12 doubles, six home runs and 28 RBIs in 76 games during four stints with Boston in 2024.

Pittsburgh signed lefty Caleb Ferguson to a one-year deal on Jan. 10. He had a combined 4.64 ERA in 62 relief outings for the Yankees and Astros last season.

Outfielder Andrew McCutchen returns to the Pirates on a one-year deal. He had 20 home runs and 50 RBIs for Pittsburgh in 2024. McCutchen ranks in the franchise’s career top 10 in several categories, including home runs (fourth, 235) and RBIs (seventh, 818).

St. Louis Cardinals: Nolan Arenado’s future has been one of the main storylines in St. Louis. The third baseman has been mentioned in trade speculation throughout the offseason.

Paul Goldschmidt, who spent the last six seasons with the Cardinals, signed a one-year deal with the Yankees in December.

Additions to the Cardinals include claiming pitcher Bailey Horn, who spent time in both the White Sox and Cubs systems, off waivers. Horn had a 6.50 ERA in 18 relief appearances for the Red Sox last season.
