FREMONT >> A 79-year-old woman was fatally injured in a single-car crash Monday night in Fremont.
Officers were called to the 40500 block of Albrae Street around 6:40 p.m. for a report of a solo vehicle collision, according to the Fremont Police Department. They arrived to find Jaya Kanwai Mirchandani, suffering from major injuries, including significant head trauma.
Authorities identified Mirchandani early Thursday. Her passenger was not injured, police said.
Medics rushed Mirchandani to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries, according to police.
The death marked Fremont’s second fatal traffic collision of the year.
An investigation revealed the car was traveling southbound on Albrae Street and approaching a turn when it hit a curb, crossed a grassy area and crashed into a tree, police said.
Only the passenger was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, according to police.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police have not determined if alcohol or drugs played a role.
