For the seventh game of the regular season, there was plenty of emotion in the Red Wings’ 5-3 victory against the Devils on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena.

Christian Fischer and Ben Chiarot both had spirited fights that appeared to spark the Wings, huge goals at opportune moments, and capped by Michael Rasmussen’s empty-net goal and towering over fallen Devils forward Jack Hughes at the goal post had the Little Caesars Arena roaring.

The Wings would love to bottle that emotion and use it when needed.

“Emotion can be many different ways,” Larkin said. “It doesn’t always have to be a fight. It can be good hit, a blocked shot or a big save which we’ve been getting. It was good to see when things happened, guys stepped up for other guys.”

Lalonde agreed the fights ignited the Wings, but there are different ways in today’s NHL to get similar sparks.

“The league has changed a little bit,” Lalonde said. “Tough can be different ways. Winning battles, getting your nose in there. As excited as I was (for Fischer’s fight), I was more excited about the forecheck and being physical and finishing the check on a big player. That’s tough, for me, in today’s NHL and we’d like a little more of that consistently.”

The picture of Rasmussen hovering over Hughes was all over social media. The Devils didn’t particularly care for the moment.

“Obviously we would take exception and I’m sure they did too, but it’s all part of the intensity of the sport,” Lalonde said. “But you want some of that raw emotion which we had (Thursday).

“That’s emotion.”
