Senior Valeria Acosta scored twice in the second half, and Pajaro Valley High’s girls soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win over host Carmel in the teams’ Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division match Wednesday.

Acosta has 43rd goals on the season, which leads all Central Coast Section players and has her tied for third in the state. She has 74 goals in her career. Her season and career totals are both school records.

Junior Scarlet Gomez registered her 25th assist of the season for the division champion Grizzlies (17-1-1, 9-0-1), who have two games remaining in the regular season.

Carmel sophomore Eva Sedillos scored on a pass from junior Ryan Lott in the first half.

Freshmen Denise Magallon and Kendra Rivas each made three saves for the Grizzlies, who host Pacific Collegiate School on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Senior goalie Adi Clark made fives saves for the Padres (5-6-5, 4-2-3).

At PCS 1, North Monterey County 0 >> Anna Walker-Edwards scored in the 37th minute, and the Pumas made it hold up as the decisive goal in their PCAL Mission Division win at Depot Park in Santa Cruz on Wednesday.

It was PCS’s fifth shutout of the season. Goalie Amelie Pan made two saves while playing the entire first half and last five minutes of the second half. Pumas teammate Farrin O’Hara made one save over 35 minutes in the second half.

PCS (6-6-1, 4-3-1) plays at Pajaro Valley (16-1-1, 9-0-1) on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

At Alisal 4, Monte Vista Christian 1 >> Sophomore striker Tea Knowles scored the equalizer in the 41st minute, but the Mustangs gave up three unanswered goals in their PCAL Mission Division loss Wednesday.

MVC had seven shots on goal but was unable to capitalize on its chances.

Goalie Charlotte Groves made four saves for the Mustangs (3-9-3, 1-6-1), who host North Salinas (1-13-1, 0-8-1) on Friday at 5:45 p.m.

Boys soccer

Harbor 2, at San Lorenzo Valley 0 >> Diego Cortes had a goal and an assist in the Pirates’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League win Wednesday.

Phinn Hilton also scored a goal, and Alex Aparicio had an assist.

Senior goalie Keenan Buntz made nine saves for the Cougars.

Goalies Damian Escalante and Calvin Schwartz split time and each made two saves for Harbor.

Harbor (13-2-1, 5-1-0) hosts Soquel on Friday at 7 p.m.

At Aptos 2, Soquel 1 >> Ivan Zavala and River Cook scored for the Mariners in their SCCAL win Wednesday.

Zavala finished off a cross from Nicolas Topete in the 15th minute, and the Mariners led 1-0 at the half. Cook scored on a cross from Josiah Siqueiros in the 51st minute.

Eli Bootz scored for Soquel. Goalie Andrew Bucio made five saves for the Knights.

Goalkeeper Noah Curran made four saves for the Mariners.

Aptos (10-4-2, 5-1-1) plays at Santa Cruz (10-5-1, 5-1-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Santa Cruz 4, at Scotts Valley 0 >> Junior Stefan Ciesiolkiewics scored twice Wednesday, and the Cardinals shut out the Falcons in SCCAL play for the second time this week.

Rodolpho Cardona and Alejandro Carmona also scored. Junior Andres Gonzalez had two assists, and Cutler Bauscher also set up a goal.

Scotts Valley hosts SLV on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Goalie Stephen Yee made two saves for the Cardinals (10-5-1, 5-1-1), who host Aptos (10-4-2, 5-1-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.

PCS 4, at NMC 1 >> Seniors Elan Rizvi-Newman, James Joyce, and Jack McNulty, and sophomore Alex Lindhe scored for the Pumas in their PCAL Cypress Division win Wednesday.

Senior goalie Sam Manchester made multiple saves for the Pumas (3-4-7, 2-3-4), who host division leading Gonzales (12-3-2, 8-1-0) on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Ceiba 2, at MVC 1 >> The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held on for the PCAL Cypress Division win on Wednesday.

Brandon Kelley scored on a pass from Maxx Montenegro for the Mustangs (4-10-3, 1-7-1), and goalie Matteo Montenegro made nine saves.

On Friday, Ceiba (5-8-1, 4-4-1) plays at Carmel (8-5-1, 5-3-0) at 3:30 p.m., and MVC plays at Soledad (5-6-4, 4-2-3) at 5:45 p.m.

Men’s basketball

Cabrillo 75, at Monterey Peninsula 71 >> Freshman forward Dai’shaun Buie scored 20 points and sophomore guard Max Parmigiani made five 3-pointers and scored 18 points in the Seahawks’ Coast Conference South Division win Wednesday.

Freshman guard Skylarr Redwood chipped in with 10 points for the Seahawks (14-10, 6-2), who started the game without sophomore guard Zavier Sims and ended it without freshman guard Walzel Evans.

“We were able to play good enough defense and find just enough offense to get by,” Seahawks coach James Page said. “Dai’Shaun Buie and Max Parmigiani were really good tonight.”

Kenneth Brown scored 19 points to lead the Lobos (1-22, 0-7). Paris Clay had 15 points, and Corvell Simmons chipped in with 12 points.

Cabrillo hosts Foothill (7-17, 3-5) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Girls basketball

St. Francis 58, at Pajaro Valley 31 >> Freshman guard Liliana Whitmeyer produced her second straight 30-point game on Wednesday, and the Sharks moved closer to repeating as PCAL Cypress Division champion. She also had eight rebounds, and seven steals.

Sophomore Maya Calfee had 13 points, nine rebounds, seven steals, five assists, and two blocks for the Sharks (20-2, 11-0). Freshman guard Keira Grio had seven points and two assists.

Karley Alvarado scored nine points to pace the Grizzlies (4-14, 2-7), and Liz Zamora added eight points.

On Friday at 5:30 p.m., St. Francis plays at Greenfield (3-10, 3-5), while Pajaro Valley plays at Pacific Collegiate (10-9, 6-5).

PCS 48, at Seaside 24 >> Sophomore forward Kat Buckley and senior guard Addie Payne recorded double-doubles, and the Pumas won their PCAL Cypress Division game Wednesday.

Buckley had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Payne had six points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and five blocks.

Junior guard Julia Guth had six points, seven rebounds, and four assists for the Pumas (10-9, 6-5).

PCS hosts Pajaro Valley (4-14, 2-7) on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

NMC 45, at MVC 23 >> Senior Sophia Cortes scored a team-high 18 points, but the Mustangs lost their PCAL Mission Division game Wednesday.

Senior Ashley Torres led the Condors (16-5, 8-2) with 20 points.

MVC (5-15, 1-7) plays at North Salinas (1-20, 0-9) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Boys basketball

At St. Francis 80, Gonzales 45 >> Robert Gomez scored a team-high 18 points, and the Sharks clinched no worse than a share of the PCAL Mission Division title on Wednesday.

Nash Horton had 17 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and three steals for the Sharks (19-3, 10-0), who led 36-27 at the half. Jacob Jimenez had 11 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Isaiah Villalobos had 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Ale Jordan scored 15 points for the Spartans (6-11, 3-6). Ray Blanco added 10 points.

St. Francis plays at Greenfield (10-10, 4-5) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Soledad 76, PCS 29 >> The Pumas trailed 21-7 after the first quarter and were unable to recover in their PCAL Cypress Division loss Wednesday.

Ian Bulfin scored a team-high 18 points for PCS (3-12, 1-8), which plays at Gonzales (6-10, 3-5) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Pablo Morales made nine 3-pointers and scored 42 points to lead the Aztecs (12-10, 8-2).

College baseball

At Laney 8, Cabrillo 6 >> Catcher Kaiden Hoapili had two hits, two RBI, and scored twice in the Seahawks’ nonconference loss Wednesday.

Second baseman Jacob Fiorenza also had two of the Seahawks’ nine hits.

Leo Asfar had a double and three RBI for the Eagles (5-1).

Alex Gomez pitched five innings and earned the win. Oscar Knapp pitched 4 2/3 innings and took the loss.

Cabrillo (2-3) was scheduled plays at West Hills Coalinga (0-6) on Thursday afternoon, after the Sentinel went to press.
