


Mary Lou Retton, US gymnastics icon, arrested on suspicion of DUI
FAIRMONT, W.Va. >> American gymnastics icon Mary Lou Retton faces a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence following her arrest in her West Virginia hometown.
Fairmont police stopped Retton on May 17 following a report about a person in a Porsche driving erratically. According to the criminal complaint, Retton smelled of alcohol and was slurring her words, and she failed a field sobriety test. Officers also reported observing a container of wine in the passenger seat.
Ex-NBA star Kemp pleads guilty to assault charge in Washington parking lot shooting
TACOMA, Wash. >> Former NBA star Shawn Kemp pleaded guilty to an assault charge on Tuesday for shooting at two men inside a vehicle in a Washington state mall parking lot.
Kemp, 55, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in Pierce County Superior Court in Tacoma as part of a plea agreement, according to the county Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. The Toyota 4Runner the men were inside and another vehicle were damaged in the March 2023 shooting, but the men were not hurt.
Kemp was initially charged with one count of first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement, but prosecutors last week added another count of assault as well as a drive-by shooting charge, The Seattle Times reported. Convictions on those charges could have resulted in a lengthy prison term.
Mexico’s Del Toro just barely maintains Giro lead in 16th stage after Carapaz attacks
SAN VALENTINO, Italy >> Mexican rider Isaac Del Toro just barely maintained his Giro d’Italia lead during the grueling 16th stage Tuesday, when 2019 champion Richard Carapaz of Ecuador was the big mover in the overall standings.
When Carapaz, who also won gold at the 2020 Olympics, attacked on the finishing climb in the Dolomites, Del Toro had no response.
Del Toro’s lead was reduced to 26 seconds ahead of British rider Simon Yates and 31 seconds ahead of Carapaz.
Del Toro, who was wearing pink for the seventh consecutive stage, lost nearly two minutes to Carapaz, who soloed to victory at the end of the 11th stage when Del Toro became the first Mexican leader in Giro history.
New Zealand teenager dies imitating a collision ‘sport’ trending on social media
WELLINGTON, New Zealand >> A 19-year-old New Zealand man has died after imitating with friends a new tackling game trending on social media in which competitors run at each other and collide while wearing no protective equipment.
Police confirmed Ryan Satterthwaite suffered a head injury on Sunday while playing a backyard game with friends in the North Island city of Palmerston North. He died on Monday as a result of his injuries.
Area police commander Inspector Ross Grantham described Satterthwaite’s death as “a huge tragedy” and urged others to “consider the significant safety and injury risks” of the game which is known as RUNIT or RUNIT Straight.
“A young man lost his life as a result of participating in what I understand to be a social media frenzy,” Grantham said. “While this is not a criminal matter, police will continue to undertake inquiries on behalf of the coroner,” Grantham said.
