One of Colorado’s top young pass rushers is apparently heading to the transfer portal.
On Tuesday, On3 Sports reported that sophomore defensive end Taje McCoy intends to enter the transfer portal when it opens Wednesday. The 10-day spring transfer portal window closes on April 25.
McCoy has been at CU the past two seasons and provided a boost to the pass rush in 2024. He finished with 23 tackles, four sacks and two quarterback hurries in 13 games off the bench.
In 2023, the 6-foot-3, 250-pounder from Oklahoma City, Okla., appeared in four games but maintained his redshirt. He has three years of eligibility remaining. CU led the Big 12 with 39 sacks last year, and McCoy tied for third on the team with his four. The Buffs’ sack leader, BJ Green, who had 7.5, has graduated. Four others who had at least three sacks are still slated to return: Arden Walker (4.5), Keaten Wade (4.0), Amari McNeill (3.5) and Samuel Okunlola (3.0).
No move for Mikell
In recent practices, redshirt freshman receiver Kam Mikell has been seen going through drills with the Buffs’ running backs. There are no plans to move the 6-1, 195-pounder to the backfield, though.
“Kam’s gonna be a wideout for us,” offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said Tuesday. “During spring sometimes you have short numbers for whatever reason. A guy might be missing because of class or whatever, so to get through practice you do certain things. We see him as a wideout.”
CU is a bit shorthanded in the backfield after last year’s leading rusher, Isaiah Augustave, recently left the team.
Last year, the Buffs were shorthanded going into the spring game and had receiver Isaiah Hardge play out of the backfield.
