Distilling company plans bottling plant in southern Indiana
NEW ALBANY — A distilling company plans to establish a new bottling plant at the site of a former Pillsbury plant in southern Indiana.
The $66 million project from Metairie, La.-based Sazerac Co. was announced Wednesday. Officials said the development in Floyd County is expected to create up to 110 jobs by 2021. The plant is in New Albany, across the Ohio River from Louisville, Ky.
The plant is the company’s first in Indiana and it will expand Sazerac’s alcohol processing, blending, packaging and distribution capabilities.
The new facility is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2018.
The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered Sazerac up to $900,000 in conditional tax credits and up to $150,000 in training grants. The former Pillsbury plant has been vacant since closing in 2016.
Man convicted
of neglect in death
of 5-year-old boy
MARTINSVILLE — A central Indiana man had been convicted of neglect and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old son, who had special needs.
A jury in Morgan County returned the verdict early Wednesday in the case against Steven Ingalls Jr., who authorities said suffocated Brayson Price in November 2016 and intentionally caused the child to overdose on medication. Sentencing is June 26.
Investigators who examined the Mooresville man’s phone said they discovered internet searches, including “I want to kill my autistic child,” “painful ways to die” and “most painful torture.”
Ingalls’ defense wanted jurors to not be emotionally swayed by evidence and to look at whether he had responsibility in the death.
Brayson’s mother, Meghan Price, is awaiting trial on neglect and conspiracy to commit murder charges.
Authorities identify 3 family members dead from house
fire in Allen County
FORT WAYNE — Authorities have identified three people who died in a weekend fire in northeastern Indiana as a mother, father and their 12-year-old son.
The Allen County coroner’s office on Tuesday said Amber Dawn Shaw, 43, Larry Bernard Shaw, 46, and their son Elijah Shaw all died as a result of injuries in the house fire early Saturday in the Fort Wayne area. A fourth person in the house was injured.
The coroner’s office says Larry Shaw and Elijah Shaw died at the scene while Amber Shaw was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire crews from several departments responded to the fire and worked for about two hours to get it under control.
Man upset over vehicle restrictions in state wilderness
BLOOMINGTON — An Indiana man is upset that he’ll now have limited access to part of the Hoosier National Forest that includes a cemetery where his family is buried.
The Herald Times reported that 81-year-old Kenneth Hays wants access to the Charles C. Deam Wilderness, particularly the Hays 2 Cemetery. The wilderness area borders Lake Monroe near Bloomington.
But local forest supervisor Michael Chaveas released an opinion earlier this year that limits vehicle access.
Chaveas said that a 1999 forest policy allows direct relatives to use motorized vehicles to visit cemeteries in Deam Wilderness. But he said only one person requests access each year and it’s no longer economically feasible to maintain the trails.
Hays has filed a complaint with the United State Department of Agriculture, alleging the opinion violates his civil rights.
