In Loving Memory Doris Fae Bergst, 91, long time resident of Danville, CA, died peacefully following a brief illness. Doris was born to Edward and Dora Koenig, in Edwardsville, IL, where she was raised with her brothers Alvin and Vernon and twin sister, Dorothy.
Doris graduated from Edwardsville High School and, in 1953, married Gerald Alexander of Edwardsville. They had two daughters and in 1958, moved to San Jose where Doris attended West Valley College and obtained a Veterinary Assistant and Medical Technologist certificate: afterwards, working for a local veterinary office. She also worked for as the secretary of her church, Immanuel Lutheran of Saratoga, CA.
In 1971, she married George Bergst and raised his three children as her own. Doris and George were blessed with 29 years of married life.
Doris loved cooking, gardening, sewing, bridge, and Scrabble. She thoroughly enjoyed hosting family gatherings, including Christmas cookie decorating get-togethers with her grandchildren and Easter egg hunts in the backyard. Life revolved around her church, family and kitchen. She volunteered for Lutheran World Relief where she helped make hundreds of quilts; and at Loaves &Fishes where she chopped more fruit and veggies than one can imagine. At the end of abusy day, Doris enjoyed aglass of red wine and abite of brie.
Doris is survived by her daughters, Sheryl Johnson (Doug) and Kera Alexander (Don Ploof), and George’s children, Karen Fetzer (Shermann, dec.), Michael Bergst, (Cheri), and Anne Higbee (Terry). She is also survived by her grandchildren, including Eric Burgess (Melinda), Benjamin (Ploof) Plume (Emily), Shermann Fetzer (Kelley), Christopher Bergst (Michelle), Candice Bergst, Megan Jankowski (Tyler), Katie Achen (Matt), Sarah Hovland (Jonathan), and 10 Great Grandchildren, including Mason and Cayden Burgess, Maddie and Finn Fetzer, Kelsey, Kaleb and Kane Bergst, Miles and Kassidy Achen, and Clayton Hovland. Her sister-in-law, Phyllis Servinski and several dear nieces and nephews, also survive her.
Doris loved and was dearly loved by many and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, February 10, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2305 Camino Tassajara, Danville, CA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Messiah Lutheran Church of Danville, CA, Loaves & Fishes of Contra Costa County, Concordia Theological Seminary or the Alzheimer’s Association, all of which Doris supported throughout her life.
