Over the weekend, news broke that former President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of prostate cancer.

The 82-year-old former president reportedly was diagnosed on Friday following urinary issues. The cancer has reportedly spread to his bones. However, despite this grim development, Biden’s office indicated “the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management.”

Amid all of the well-wishing of the former president of course came some political uproar, with some questioning the timing of the news.

Just days ago, Axios released audio of Biden’s 2023 interviews with special counsel Robert Hur conducted as part of Hur’s inquiry into Biden’s handling of classified materials after he served as vice president.

Hur would go on to report in 2024 that among the reasons he suggested against prosecuting Biden was his belief, based on interacting with the then-president, that jurors would perceive Biden as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

You may remember the torrent of attacks on Hur for that line, as well as his other notes indicating Biden had notable cognitive lapses. Democratic operatives and many media members insisted publicly that Biden was in fact as sharp as ever.

Many Americans thought differently, and the audio only underscored what many thought: that the president of the United States was cognitively impaired. Yet some, like Democratic operative David Axelrod, took to CNN on Sunday to argue that in light of Biden’s cancer diagnosis, such discussion “should be more muted and set aside for now as he’s struggling through this.”

Which brings us to our question of the week: What do you all make of this?

Do you believe Biden was cognitively impaired as president?

Now that he’s no longer president, does it matter?

Is it wrong to talk about his mental decline when he’s now facing a serious cancer diagnosis?
