Marin Catholic’s Walker Untermann decided a three-home run, nine-RBI game Tuesday was not quite enough.

He had to do something for an encore. And indeed, he did.

Three days after leading the Wildcats’ offense to a 26-2 victory against host Tam, Walker Untermann pitched five two-hit innings and struck out 10 in Marin Catholic’s 8-1 victory against the same MCAL opponent on a faux summer Friday in Kentfield.

“That’s a good month for some guys,” MC coach Jesse Foppert said.

Walker Untermann — with his brother Wade Untermann his battery mate — was in control from the outset, striking out the side in the first.

“Any time he has command of his breaking ball like that, he’s going to be tough,” Foppert said. “In his last few outings, his breaking ball has been better than average.”

Walker Untermann’s first three out pitches were all breaking balls.

“I trust my slider and my curve,” Walker Untermann said. “I just wanted to get ahead of the batters. I was throwing all my pitches for strikes.”

Walker Untermann, who faced four hitters above the minimum, hit one batter and walked one. He struck out four of the final eight hitters he faced.Walker Untermann’s only bump in the road came in the second when he allowed a leadoff double to Tam catcher Anthony Murphy — a grounder directly over the third base bag — and a two-out run-scoring double by first baseman Trey Sasso that rattled around in the left field corner.

Sasso’s RBI double tied the score at 1-1.

The Wildcats (7-1, 5-1 MCAL) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first. Leadoff hitter James Stocker drilled a single up the middle and quickly scored the first run of the game on an infielder’s throwing error.

Tam starting pitcher Hank Ballard, however, was resilient.

Ballard escaped a 24-pitch, two-walk opening inning, allowing only one unearned run. He struck out MC right fielder Cooper Benjamin on a nasty breaking ball with the bases loaded to squelch the rally.

The Wildcats scored the only other run they would need in the third. Johnny Greco walked and stole second. Wade Untermann bunted Greco to third and Cooper Mitchell drove in his first of three runs when he barreled up a line drive single to left.

Mitchell iced the victory in the fourth when he blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence off Tam relief pitcher Henry Pearson’s second pitch.

“(Mitchell) squared it up,” Foppert said. “He’s been swinging well for the last four games now. I’m not surprised to see it.”

Hard-throwing southpaw Benjamin pitched two scoreless innings for the Wildcats to close out the victory. Benjamin struck out three and gave up one hit.

Sasso had two of three hits for the Red-tailed Hawks (4-5, 2-2).
