Bay FC allowed a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Trinity Armstrong headed a corner kick from Kenza Dali into the ground and into the net to lift San Diego Wave FC to a 2-1 win at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday.

It was the first career goal for the 17-year-old Armstrong, who met Dali’s corner just in front of the net and headed it down, causing it to bounce over Bay FC’s defenders and past goalie Jordan Silkowitz.

Karlie Lema scored the only goal for Bay FC, as she took a pass from Racheal Kundananji and right footed a shot to the left corner past goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan to tie the game 1-1 at the 18th minute. That came 12 minutes after San Diego’s Kennedy Wesley scored on a header that got past a diving Silkowitz for her first goal of the season.

Silkowitz finished with three saves, including one on a penalty shot by María Sánchez in the 27th minute. San Diego also hit the post three times, including one by Delphine Cascarino in the 88th minute.

Bay FC (2-3-2) travels to play the Kansas City Current next Sunday.

Rugby

Cal won its 29th national title in 15-man rugby and its first since 2017 on Saturday when the Bears defeated Life University 55-38.

Freshman flyhalf Filip Edstrom was named Man of the Match as he made six of his eight conversion kicks and opened the scoring with a penalty kick.

Life led midway through the first half and again midway through the second, but the Bears scored the last three tries to seal a win in the highest-scoring national title match in Division 1-A history.

Seven different Bears scored tries in addition to Edstrom’s 15 points on kicks. Masi Koi scored twice: 40 seconds into the second half on a chip-and-chase after a turnover, and the game-sealing try in the 77th minute.

After Life scored consecutive tries to retake the lead in the second half, Oliver Newall and Joe Kirsten reached the tryzone within four minutes of each other. Then Koi capped the scoring.

“Very difficult game. There was a lot of resolve in both teams,” coach Jack Clark told the university’s website. “It was punch-for-punch for 80 minutes.”

Clark, who captured his 30th career title between 15-man and sevens, also shouted out senior captain Charlie Walsh as “one of the legendary Cal captains” for his leadership this season.

Golf

Scottie Scheffler matched the PGA Tour’s 72-hole scoring record on Sunday, finishing at 253 and running away with an eight-shot victory at his hometown CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas. The top-ranked Scheffler, who closed with a 63 to finish at 31 under par, tied the mark set by Justin Thomas at the 2017 Sony Open and equaled six years later by Ludvig Aberg at the RSM Classic.

Bryson DeChambeau held off a big charge from Charles Howell III with birdies on his last two holes for a 6-under 66 for a two-shot victory at LIV Golf Korea, his first title since winning the U.S. Open last summer.

Haeran Ryu made an 8-foot eagle putt during a flawless back nine and pulled away with an 8-under 64, giving her a five-shot victory at the inaugural Black Desert Championship in the LPGA Tour’s return to Utah after a 61-year absence.

Motorsports

Oscar Piastri maintained his advantage in the Formula 1 championship by capturing the Miami Grand Prix for his fourth win through six races this season. Piastri has won three consecutive F1 races for McLaren Racing, where he and teammate Lando Norris are trying to dethrone four-time defending champ Max Verstappen of Red Bull.

Reigning NASCAR Cup champion Joey Logano surged ahead on the restart in overtime to win the Würth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. Logano led only seven of the 271 laps.

Horse racing

Sovereignty’s Kentucky Derby victory in the muck at Churchill Downs sparked curiosity over whether the colt can build on his signature win over a possibly drier, faster surface on the Triple Crown trail. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott didn’t sound like someone preparing Sovereignty for a trip to Baltimore to run in the 150th Preakness Stakes on May 17 at Pimlico Race course, offering a cautious approach Sunday. He mentioned a small scrape on the horse’s right front pastern, likely resulting from clipping heels with another horse coming out of the gate, but said it wasn’t serious.

NFL

Mike Green said he’s been open about the fact that he’s faced multiple sexual assault allegations, but did not discuss further details at the Baltimore Ravens rookie camp this weekend. The Ravens drafted the edge rusher in the second round last month, with those allegations likely hurting his draft stock.

“Every team asked me, and I’ve been completely open about everything,” Green said. “It’s something that I had to go through, and I got through it.”

Green played at Virginia and then at Marshall. He said at the NFL scouting combine that he transferred after being accused of sexual assault for a second time. Green told reporters at the combine that he also was accused of sexual assault in high school. He said he was never charged and insisted he did nothing wrong.

Tennis

Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka claimed her first WTA title since her win at the 2021 Australian Open, beating Kaja Juvan 6-1, 7-5 to capture the L’Open 35 de Saint-Malo — a WTA 125 tournament — and secure her first ever trophy on clay. It was also Osaka’s first WTA title since she became a mother in July 2023, returning to tennis at the start of the following year.

Casper Ruud became the first Norwegian to win a Masters 1000 title after beating Jack Draper 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in the Madrid Open final. The former second-ranked Ruud rallied from 5-3 down in the first set and sealed the victory after capitalizing on his lone break at 2-2 in the third.

WNBA

Caitlin Clark made the shot everyone came to see, stopping late in the third quarter of the WNBA preseason game between the Indiana Fever and Brazilian national team and launching a 3-pointer near the “22” logo on Iowa’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena court. It was the spot where she hit the shot in her senior season in 2024 that made her the all-time leading scorer in NCAA women’s basketball, and it went in.

This shot, with 25 seconds left in the third quarter, capped Clark’s return to the arena where she broke records on her way to becoming the NCAA Division I all-time scoring leader.

Clark, starting her second season with the Fever, scored 16 points in Indiana’s 108-44 win.
