MEGA MILLIONS

Maine gets first jackpot with $1.35B grand prize

Maine scored its first Mega Millions jackpot when a ticket purchased in the state matched the winning numbers for the lottery’s estimated $1.35 billion grand prize.

The lucky combination of numbers drawn late Friday night were 30, 43, 45, 46, 61 and gold Mega Ball 14. The winning ticket was sold at Hometown Gas & Grill in Lebanon, Maine, according to the Maine State Lottery. The southern Maine town of more than 6,500 residents is on the New Hampshire line.

“There’s quite abuzz at our small-town gas station this morning,” said owner Fred Cotreau.

The winner, whose name is not yet known, overcame steep odds of one in 302.6 million, which led to three months of drawings without a claim on the jackpot.

The jackpot was the second-largest in Mega Millions history and the fourth time the game has had a billion-dollar win. The largest Mega Millions jackpot, in October 2018, was $1.53 billion claimed by a single ticket holder in South Carolina.

Friday’s drawing also marked the seventh time there was a grand prize winner on Friday the 13th.

To claim the full $1.35 billion, the winner would need to take the money in an annuity with annual payments over 29 years. Most jackpot recipients prefer the reduced but quicker cash option, which for Friday was an $724.6 million.

BOULDER

Mayor’s wife injured after being struck by car

Cherry Anderson, wife of Boulder Mayor Aaron Brockett, sustained minor injuries after being hit by a car in North Boulder Thursday.

Brockett said his wife had been walking their dog about 5 p.m. and was crossing Broadway at Rosewood Avenue via a crosswalk when a truck turned in front of her without yielding, forcing her to stop in the median area.

After the truck moved past and Anderson continued crossing the road, another vehicle turning left on Broadway struck her with its corner, sending her airborne before she hit the pavement, Brockett said. The dog was not injured.

“People rushed to her aid right away,” Brockett said.

That included an off-duty ER nurse who helped treat Anderson’s injuries and another person who held the dog’s leash. Responders from the police and fire departments arrived shortly.

Anderson spent seven hours in the emergency room at Boulder Community Health. She has since been allowed to return home, according to Brockett.
