If I could give one piece of advice for weekend fun, it would be to travel as close to the Delta breeze as possible.

All jokes aside, in spite of the projected heat, there will be plenty of ways to fill up the weekend with social activities locally that should help keep you cool and maybe even get you outside for a while. Just drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen.

Slice of Chico

Not only is watermelon superior to most other forms of melon, it gets its own little pseudo holiday here in the city with the annual Slice of Chico, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in downtown Chico.

The free event comes with free, freshly sliced watermelon and a good excuse to meet other community members and shop local.

Local businesses are expected to have sidewalk sales and entertainment will be provided alongside games.

Many Views of Bidwell Mansion

Honoring one of Chico’s most beloved landmarks, the Museum of Northern California Art is hosting Many Views of Bidwell Mansion, an exhibit showcasing local art representing the mansion, curated by Dolores Mitchell, a former Chico State art history professor.

“Presenting a singular building from many different vantage points and through many mediums solidifies how the site’s history lives on,” the event page reads. “A range of artists, from novices to professionals, are included in the exhibition and contributed artworks in many mediums including watercolor, pastel, linocut prints, photographs and more!”

Many Views of Bidwell Mansion opens Thursday and will be on display through Aug. 24. At 6 p.m. Friday, an opening reception is planned.

Another exhibit, Enduring Landmarks, also opens to the public this weekend and focuses on buildings, memories and travels.

The museum is located at 900 The Esplanade in Chico.

Gravel Grind

Now if you want some adventure in your weekend, look no further than the Butte County Gravel Grind, a bike ride through the mountain trails in and around the Colby Mountain Recreation Area on Sunday.

Entry to the race costs $100 per adult and $75 for kids with all funding going toward the 40-mile Colby Mountain Project which will significantly extend the trail system at the rec area.

Participants will be able to choose from multiple courses with the longest being the 52.2-mile course, starting at the recreation area at 8 p.m. followed by the 38.2-mile short course that starts at 8:20 a.m.

Additionally, there will be an untimed race — the Lookout Loop — which spans 24 miles. Tickets for this race come out to a flat $75.

The race is hosted by Chico Velo. Racers will start at 7473 Humboldt Road in Butte Meadows.
