Physician, Professor
It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of Dr.
William “Bill” Weston, beloved father, grandfather, colleague, and friend. Bill passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 13th, 2022, at the age of 84.
Bill was born on August 13th, 1938, to Eugene and Katherine Weston in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. He moved to Richmond, Washington as a toddler. He was delighted when his cousins, Marilyn and Nancy, came to live with his family and became like sisters to him. He met Janet Atkinson at the University of South Dakota while pursuing his undergraduate degree, and they married in June of 1964.
Bill was a pioneer in the field of pediatric dermatology. After earning his medical degree from the University of Colorado in 1965, he completed three residencies and a fellowship before founding the Section of Pediatric Dermatology at the University in 1972, which he led until his retirement in 2005. He also served as the chair of the Department of Dermatology from 1976 to 2001, and as a professor of pediatrics and dermatology from 1979 to 2005. Bill was the founder of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology and authored more than 353 publications over the course of his career. He was also responsible for the development of the epidermolysis bullosa clinic at Children’s Hospital Colorado and was honored with a University of Colorado Medal in 2022 for his contributions to the field of pediatric dermatology.
Despite all of his incredible accomplishments, Bill was known most of all for his humility and sense of humor. He lit up any room he entered with his contagious laugh, and his jokes (good and bad) will live on.
Bill was also a sports fanatic. He was able to recite the stats of any baseball player in history, and over the years, he traveled with his son to every major league baseball field in the country to watch a game on each team’s home field. Obviously, the World Series was treated with great reverence in the Weston household. In addition to watching baseball, Bill loved to read. Every holiday, his family was hard-pressed to find books to gift him that he hadn’t already read.
Family was Bill’s number one priority, and as such he was known by all as a loving and devoted father and grandfather. He always had time to play hide and seek, coach basketball, and attend choir concerts. We will forever be grateful for his endless support and love, and he has left his mark on our hearts forever.
Bill is survived by his wife Janet Weston, his children Betsy Nugent and Kemp Weston, and his granddaughters, Amelia Nugent and Rachel Weston.
We invite you to join us in celebrating Bill’s life at the Denver Botanic Gardens Mitchell Hall on Sunday, January 8th, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
