Senior Allie Clements blasted two home runs to help Stanford’s 18th-ranked women’s softball team knock off No. 1-ranked Texas 9-5 in the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. on Friday afternoon.

The Cardinal (11-1) scored the eventual game-winning runs on River Mahler’s two-run single that snapped a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning. Then Joie Economides put an exclamation point on the inning with a three-run homer to break the game open.

The win means Stanford has now defeated a top-2 team in the country for the third time since last season. The Cardinal had victories over No. 2 Tennessee and No. 2 Texas last February.

College basketball

Thomas scores 23 as USF beats Pacific >> Malik Thomas scored 18 of his 23 points in the second half to help San Francisco defeat Pacific 71-58 on Thursday night.

Thomas scored 18 second-half points to spark the Dons (22-7, 12-4 West Coast Conference). USF’s Tyrone Riley IV had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Marcus Williams also scored 14.

The Tigers (9-21, 4-12) were led in scoring by Elijah Fisher, who finished with 23 points. Kris Keinys added 12 points and nine rebounds for Pacific. Lamar Washington finished with 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Santa Clara beats Loyola Marymount 76-61 >> Carlos Stewart had 16 points in Santa Clara’s 76-61 win over Loyola Marymount.

Stewart had three 3-pointers for the Broncos (18-10, 10-5 WCC).

The Broncos got 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting from Camaron Tongue, who also pulled down eight rebounds.
