New Chicago Police are awaiting charges on a man who was involved in the shooting death of his father Monday night, its police chief said Tuesday.

Officers were called around 9:26 p.m. Monday to the 500 block of West 37th Avenue for a family disturbance, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. There they found a man who’d been shot in the stomach, according to the post.

Emergency medical personnel took the man — identified by the Lake County Coroner’s office as William McNitt, 43 — to Powers Health Hobart, where he later died.

Police in the post said there’s no ongoing threat to the public.

“Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time,” said Chief Earl Mayo. “We encourage anyone with additional information to come forward as we work to understand the full context of this incident.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact the New Chicago Police Department at 219-962-1550 and request to speak with Detective Dickerson.
