Protecting Marin seniors from financial exploitation
The Bay Area has seen a spike in online financial scams during the last few years. Here in Marin County, the district attorney works with the Financial Abuse Specialist Team (FAST) to protect seniors from financial exploitation.
Formed in 2005, FAST comprises public agencies and private professionals in accounting, law and banking. FAST works with Adult Protective Services, the Marin County District Attorney’s Office and law enforcement to investigate complex financial abuse cases. They also teach seniors how to recognize scams and who to contact if they suspect financial abuse.
With more than 30% of the cases for Marin’s Adult Protective Services involving financial abuse allegations, FAST’s work is critical. It has led to restraining orders against caregivers and the establishment of conservatorships. If you suspect financial abuse, call Adult Protective Services at 415-473-2774, or contact the Elder Abuse Program at 415-473-5050.
