A road rage incident in Longmont on Thursday afternoon led to shots fired and a passenger of one of the cars involved being injured, police say.

Police responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of 17th Avenue and Lashley Street at 2:25 p.m., according to a Longmont Public Safety post.

Longmont Public Information Officer Rogelio Mares said one car struck another and that both stopped at the scene.

“Early indications are that one fired shots at the other, injuring a female passenger,” Mares said.

Mares said the female passenger was transported to a hospital and that her condition is unknown. It’s unclear if anyone was taken into custody.

Three schools were placed on a secure status “due to police activity in the area that was unrelated to the school,” Kerri McDermid, St. Vrain Valley Schools chief communications and global impact officer, said in an email shortly after 3 p.m.

Different from a lockdown, during a secure status, students remain inside the building and exterior doors and windows are locked and secured while classroom activities continue uninterrupted. The secure status was placed on Longmont High School, Longs Peak Middle School and Mountain View Elementary School and have all since been lifted.

Police are asking for witnesses to call 303-651-8501 and reference report no. 25-866.
