SALT LAKE CITY >> Utah athletic director Mark Harlan was publicly reprimanded and fined $40,000 by the Big 12 on Sunday after blasting a conference officiating crew following BYU’s 22-21 win Saturday night over the Utes for controversial calls on the Cougars’ winning drive.

Harlan took the podium shortly before Utah players and coach Kyle Whittingham arrived to address the media late Saturday night.

“This game was absolutely stolen from us,” Harlan said. “We were excited about being in the Big 12, but tonight I am not. We won this game. Someone else stole it from us. Very disappointed. I will talk to the commissioner. This was not fair to our team. I’m disgusted by the professionalism of the officiating crew tonight.”

Utah appeared to have stopped BYU (9-0, 6-0 Big 12) twice on fourth down on the final drive. A defensive holding penalty was called on one of those plays, and officials ruled BYU had called timeout before the snap on the other one. The Cougars, who moved up two spots to No. 7 in the latest AP poll Sunday, remained undefeated after kicking a field goal with four seconds remaining.

Jake Retzlaff engineered two fourth quarter scoring drives and Will Ferrin kicked a 44-yard field goal with four seconds remaining for the win.

No. 20 WASHINGTON ST. 49 UTAH ST. 28>> John Mateer threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score, Wayshawn Parker rushed for a career-best 149 yards on 11 carries and No. 20 Washington State rolled to a home victory over Utah State.

Parker sprinted for a 75-yard touchdown and also plunged in from a yard out. Kyle Williams caught three TD tosses as the Cougars (8-1, No. 21 CFP) won their fourth straight game since a 45-24 loss at then-No. 25 Boise State.

Mateer completed 18 of 24 passes for 179 yards without an interception and also ran for 55 yards on 13 attempts. Washington State racked up 303 yards on the ground and extended its best start to a season since 2018.

Derrick Jameson had a 72-yard touchdown run for the Aggies (2-7). Spencer Petras was 28-of-45 passing for 208 yards and two scores with an interception.

Herschel Turner ran for 85 yards on 16 carries.

VIRGINIA 24, No. 23 PITTSBURGH 19>>Xavier Brown caught a touchdown pass and ran for another score as Virginia upset host Pittsburgh.

Anthony Colandrea passed for 143 yards and ran for 40 more as the Cavaliers (5-4, 3-3 ACC) snapped a three-game losing streak to put a serious dent in Pitt’s hopes of crashing the ACC title game.

The Panthers (7-2, 3-2) have dropped two straight following their best start since 1982. Pitt lost quarterback Eli Holstein to an injury in the third quarter when Virginia’s Mike Diatta hit the redshirt freshman. Diatta was ejected for targeting.

Nate Yarnell, who lost a training camp battle for the starting job to Holstein, struggled in relief. Yarnell completed just 4 of 12 passes for 44 yards with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions.

AIR FORCE 36, FRESNO STATE 28>>Quentin Hayes ran for 91 yards and two second-half touchdowns on 25 carries, Dylan Carson had 120 yards rushing and a TD and Air Force beat visiting Fresno State to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Air Force (2-7, 1-4) won for the first time since it beat Merrimack 21-6 in the season opener on Aug. 31.

Hayes finished 2-of-6 passing for 14 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown to Cade Harris.
