A man has been sentenced to 60 days of jail and three years of probation for stealing $475,000 worth of jewelry from a Boulder County home.

Bryce Daniel Almus, 32, took a plea deal Wednesday in which he pleaded guilty to theft of $100,000 through $1 million and an added count of theft from $1,000 to $2,000.

Almus then was sentenced to 60 days of jail, 150 hours of community service and three years of probation.

During the sentencing hearing, Almus voiced remorse for the crime.

“I’m sorry for all the resources I’ve wasted and all the people I’ve hurt with my actions,” Almus said. “I’m very, very sorry to the homeowners.”

In response, Boulder District Judge Dea Lindsey said she appreciated the apology to the victim but was still shocked at the egregious nature of the crime.

“Mr. Almus if you came into my home and did those things the camera would’ve caught you. That’s probably true for a lot of homes so you got lucky,” Lindsey said. “I think this is one of the most egregious con artist things I’ve seen.”

Despite the defense attorney’s request to delay Almus’ admittance to jail, Lindsey ordered for him to be remanded today. Almus appeared in court today out of custody.

According to a release, Boulder County sheriff’s deputies investigated a report of burglary and theft from a home on St. Vrain Road in unincorporated Boulder County. The home was believed to have been burglarized in June of 2023 while the homeowners were out of town. The victim reported that six pieces of jewelry were stolen with a combined value of over $475,000.

The home was on the market at the time so many people were coming to the property, thus complicating the investigation. Investigators were able to determine that Almus had visited the residence on at least one occasion as a prospective buyer.

Not all the jewelry was recovered and some of the recovered items were incomplete.

BCSO’s lead detective worked in collaboration with an investigator from the victims’ insurance company and the Gemological Institute of America to obtain full descriptions of the jewelry as well as their estimated value.
