WinstonRandall (“Winn”) Schwyhart departed these friendly shores on Christmas Eve. He will be remembered by many friends and family as kind, loving, generous and gentle with people, animals, his community and the environment.
He was 83 years old and had made Berkeley and Oakland his home for the last 53 years.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Winn studied IndustrialEn- gineering at Iowa State University andgraduatedin 1963. After completing Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) there, he served in the US Navy as aLieutenant doing advanced programming.
He then moved toBowling Green, Ohio where he received aMaster’s Degree in Industrial Psychology from Bowling Green State University.
He moved to Berkeley in 1971, published in the prestigious Journal of Applied Psychology and received a PhD in Community and Clinical Psychology by 1974.
Despite his fine education and promising career in Psychology, Winn fell in love with Bay Area real estate and spent his life asa real estate investor in Berkeley and Oakland. He also had a wide appetite for investing -- from blue chip securities to start up companies and harnessrac- ing.
He was along-time member of the Union of Concerned Scientists and regularly attended their meetings at the historic BerkeleyCityClub (formerly the Berkeley City Women’s Club). He wasagenerous donor to many charities, especially those dedicated to environmental conservation and to Camping Unlimited for the Developmentally Disabled.
He will be mourned ina privateservice attendedby close friends and family.
