After attending prom Friday night with several of her teammates, Oak Forest’s Katharine Holewa confirmed it was tough to get up for Saturday’s 10 a.m. kickoff at Argo.

“We were pretty tired,” Holewa said. “At halftime, we talked and tried to figure out what we needed to do to get more energy up.”

Holewa provided instant energy and gave the Bengals the spark they needed. The senior forward came off the bench to score a second-half goal as Oak Forest salvaged a 1-1 tie in a South Suburban crossover.

“We have different players with different styles of attack,” Oak Forest coach Pam Whitehead said. “When our opponent gets used to seeing one kind of style, we can give them another look. (Holewa) is fast, and she’s more of a long-ball player.”

Xochiquetzal Torres-Montes scored for Argo (5-9-3, 3-2-3 South Suburban Red) in the 21st minute, and the Argonauts held onto the lead until Holewa struck for the Bengals (11-4-1, 5-1-1 South Suburban Blue) with 27:34 left in the game.

Madison Cline-Laycoax played a long pass ahead toward Holewa in the middle of the box to set up the goal.

The ball took a high bounce off the turf when it found Holewa, but she waited for it to come down and volleyed it into the net for her third goal of the season.

“It was kind of a tough bounce, but I was able to kick it over the goalie’s head,” Holewa said. “Coming off the bench, I just try to do something good right away and help my team.”

It has been a memorable season for Holewa and the Bengals. Oak Forest has topped 11 wins just once in the past decade, earning 13 victories in 2015, and the Bengals have four regular-season games and the playoffs left to beat that mark.

“We get along so well as a group, and it’s a great environment,” Holewa said. “This has been great for the seniors because we can go out strong.”

Torres-Montes helped the Argonauts snap a three-game losing streak when she took a throw-in from Stefanie De La Torre, cut to the net and scored on a high shot in the 21st minute.

“We wanted to fight really hard this game,” Torres-Montes said. “I just had to tell myself I could score that goal. The last few games we were kind of off. This week, we’ve been working really hard in practice and trying to make sure everyone plays hard.”

Joana Alcala-Gil made seven saves for the Argonauts. Lana Steffan finished with four saves for Oak Forest.

“We’ve played a tough schedule lately,” Argo coach John Gaytan said.

“The girls came back and played really well Thursday against Lemont (in a 2-0 loss), and they played hard in this game.

“I felt like we should’ve won this one. We just didn’t finish it.”
