


An ax-wielding man who allegedly robbed a Southfield bank and then struck a female employee in the head with the ax on Tuesday was arrested about an hour later, officials said.
According to the Southfield Police Department, the robbery and assault happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. at the PNC Bank at 28720 Northwestern Highway. The suspect is a 55-year-old Southfield resident who reportedly came into the bank, demanded cash and then after receiving it struck a female employee in the head with the ax. He left in a vehicle, and was subsequently taken into custody just after 1:30 p.m. near Greenfield and Joy roads in Detroit.
Fire department personnel transferred the injured woman to an area hospital where she is listed in stable condition, police said.
There appears to be no additional threat to the public, police said.

Police Chief Elvin Barren is expected to hold a news conference after a charging decision is made by the the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office.
