UC Santa Cruz’s Asher Kates took first in two events on Saturday, and the Banana Slugs’ men’s swim and dive team took first place with 908 points at the 2024 Slug Shootout.

Kates took first in the 200-yard individual medley (1 minute, 56.07 seconds) and 200 backstroke (1:55.92).

UCSC’s Kyle Reitan earned the victory in the 100 freestyle in 46.56. Reitan, Massimo Reyna, Andrew Koika, and Adam Sinclair teamed up for the win in the 400 free relay in 3:06.72.

The UCSC women’s team took third with 719 points.

UCSC hosts University of Pacific and San Jose State University on Saturday at noon.Women’s cross country

Bronco Invitational >> Seattle University junior Azalea Groleau, a San Lorenzo Valley High alumna, took seventh out of 186 runners at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday.

Groleau completed the 6k course at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale in 20:44.4.

Cal Poly-SLO junior Tatiana Cornejo (20:14.4) took first, and the Mustangs (45) won the team title.

UCSC’s Kenzie Seymour (20:55.4) took 14th and teammate Helena Janku (21:22.5) took 30th.

Cal Poly-SLO junior Isabel Sanchez (21:23.0), a Santa Cruz alumna, took 32nd. Long Beach State sophomore Brooke Willoughby (22:43.6), an Aptos alumna, took 111th.

Men’s cross country

Bronco Invitational >> UCSC’s Luke Holland (24:13.19) took ninth out of 145 runners at the 8k Bronco Invitational at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale on Saturday.

UC Davis junior Muhammed Ahmed (23:47.8) took first, and the Aggies (44) took first out of 17 teams. UCSC (178) took fifth.

UCSC’s Eric Anderson (24:58.8) took 32nd, and teammate Grameme Maclean (25:03.4) took 36th.

Santa Clara freshman James Ponzio (26:26.8), a Monte Vista Christian School alum, took 102nd.

Girls soccer

U.S. 2, Colombia 0 >> Santa Cruz High’s Jocelyn Travers started again on defense for Team USA in the second game of pool play at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on Saturday.

The Americans received goals from Micayla Johnson in the 43rd minute and Kennedy Fuller on a penalty kick in the 58th.

The U.S. (1-0-1) wraps up group play against Korea Republic (0-1-1) on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Men’s soccer

UCSC 3, at Cal Lutheran 3 >> Soren Groessl had a goal and an assist in the Banana Slugs’ draw in Thousand Oaks on Saturday.

Max Beldner and Joaquin Greenberg also scored for UCSC. Zander Crawford had an assist.

Goalie Tobias Jacobson-Bell made four UCSC. The Kingsmen (5-6-4) made seven saves.

UCSC (4-1-8) hosts Menlo on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

At Canada 3, Cabrillo 2 >> Yoan Ponio had a goal and an assist in the Seahawks’ Coast Conference North Division loss Friday.

Alex Castro-Neri also scored for Cabrillo (5-4-3, 3-2-1).

The Colts (6-2-5, 2-2-2) produced the decisive goal in the 58th minute.

Goalie Angel Edgar made five saves for the Seahawks, who host Hartnell (10-2-1, 4-1-1) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s volleyball

At Hartnell 3, Cabrillo 0 >> The Seahawks were swept 25-14, 25-16, 25-21 in their Coast Conference North Division match Friday.

Katie Barclay had nine kills and nine digs for the Panthers (10-12, 3-1).

The Seahawks (7-14, 2-2) play at Las Positas (9-5, 3-1) in Livermore on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Beach volleyball

No Attitudes >> A pair of Santa Cruz teams won their divisions at the No Attitudes tournament at Main Beach on Saturday.

Teen winners Morgan Nesbitt and Vicki Broshear of Santa Cruz took first in the teen division, and Gina Fiorini and Christian Bouchard from Santa Cruz took first in the coed division.

James Herceg and Kaleb Pattawi of Daly City won the men’s division.
