San Francisco >> The undermanned Warriors overcame a double-figure deficit in the fourth quarter and managed to hold on for a 109-104 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, despite some ugly mistakes in the game’s final minute.
Klay Thompson recorded a team-high 32 points, five rebounds and four assists, Donte DiVincenzo added 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Kevon Looney contributed a season-high 17 rebounds and 12 points to help the Warriors win their second straight game.
It was also the second consecutive win without stars Stephen Curry, Draymond Green or Andrew Wiggins.
“This is a huge win not only for the standings but for the confidence of the guys,” coach Steve Kerr said. “That was a team win, everybody came in there and competed and played well.”
The win over Minnesota gave Golden State a 2-1 regular-season series lead and pushed the defending champs ahead of the Timberwolves in the Western Conference standings. The 31-30 Warriors are in sole possession of the seventh seed, while the Timberwolves dropped to ninth.
About two hours before tipoff, coach Steve Kerr said Green was undergoing additional testing on a knee injury that has sidelined him for two straight games. Green was expected to receive an X-ray and MRI to help the team’s medical staff better understand the severity of his injury.
Green banged his knee in the third quarter of Thursday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. He missed the game against the Houston Rockets on the following night.
Green went through treatment Saturday without issue. But Kerr said the team was surprised to learn he experienced a setback Sunday.
“It flared up today,” Kerr said before Sunday’s game. “So he will be more thoroughly checked out today by our medical staff. It was sort of unexpected the way he came through treatment yesterday. Everything was looking good and he had a setback today so we’ll learn more today and we’ll have more (today).”
This season has been marred by injuries, with this stretch being especially brutal. The Warriors are down three starters with no clear timeline of when any of them are coming back.
Curry missed his eighth consecutive game after spraining ligaments in his lower left leg. Wiggins, known for his durability, has now missed four straight games due to a family matter. Andre Iguodala has played in only three games this season and missed the last month with a hip issue. And Gary Payton II might not be cleared before playoffs as he deals with lingering pain in his abdomen.
And now, there’s Green, who will be out for the foreseeable future with what the team is calling a right knee contusion.
But even with so many key players out, the Warriors have found ways to win.
Thompson has played a big part of that, putting the Warriors on his back the last two games. After pouring in 42 points in a needed win over the Houston Rockets on Friday, Thompson stepped up yet again Sunday.
Thompson’s basket in the final seconds of the first half gave the Warriors their first lead of the game, sending them to the locker room up 59-57.
Then, out of the break, Thompson scored 12 points, including seven straight, in the span of six minutes to keep Golden State in striking distance.
But with Thompson off the floor, the Timberwolves started to pull away. They closed out the third quarter on a 7-2 run and then carried that momentum into the fourth. Minnesota was up 10 when Thompson checked in at the 8:17 mark.
Thompson hit back-to-back 3s, including a tough one at the shot clock buzzer to pull the Warriors within two with 5:32 left. DiVincenzo tied it at 96 with a reverse layup.
Thompson fed DiVincenzo who knocked down a 3 to put the Warriors up 102-99 with three minutes left. Thompson hit a 3 to pad the Warriors’ lead to six. Looney made a tip-in basket with a minute left to cap off a 23-8 run by the Warriors.
The Timberwolves scored five unanswered points in 22 seconds to make it a 3-point game. But Jordan Poole sealed the deal, draining two free throws with four seconds left.
The Warriors will have a day off before hosting the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday.
