Redwood High claimed its second North Coast Section Division I crown with Thursday’s Division I championship victory, 10-9, over top seed San Ramon Valley in a rematch from last year’s title game.

“It was a battle! It was a great game,” Redwood head coach Lauren Yee stated.

The No. 2 Giants (19-4) last won the title in 2022. They came close in 2023 and 2024, but were frustrated by San Ramon Valley in the playoffs.

Lucy Jeffers and Lucy Miller netted three goals each for the Giants. Jeffers also won three draw controls. Presley Pewitt added two goals and two assists on offense, and forced two turnovers for a complete-game effort. Claire Johnson and Phoebe Miller each scored for the Giants, who also got a superior defensive effort from Sadie Hann, with two forced turnovers, two ground balls and five clears.

Marin Catholic successfully defended its title with a 13-6 victory over top-seeded Monte Vista in Thursday’s North Coast Section Division I championship. The No. 2 Wildcats (21-5) broke through a tough Mustangs defense for the game’s opening goal, which created a surge for Marin Catholic.

The Wildcats beat Monte Vista in the 2024 NCS semifinals, en route to a championship victory over De La Salle.

Terra Linda High swimmer Ben Butler has a busy day ahead of him at the State Meet at Clovis West High on Saturday.

Butler qualified for the finals in four different events to lead the Marin contingent. Butler had the third-fastest time in the 200 free prelims on Friday, touching the wall in 1 minute, 35.67 seconds. Butler also was fourth in the 200 free prelims with a time of 44.83.

Terra Linda also placed two relays in Saturday’s finals. Butler, Nicholas Arinduque, Jackson Wright, and Jack Middleton were third in the 200 medley relays in 1:31.31. The same quartet placed second in the 200 free relay in 1:22.55.

Beckett Shewey led the way with 29 kills and four blocks but Redwood fell 25-20, 25-17, 25-20, 27-25 to No. 2 International in the North Coast Section Division II title game on Thursday night in San Francisco.

The No. 5 Giants (26-8) qualified for next week’s NorCal playoffs having made it to a section final, becoming one of the rare boys volleyball teams from Marin to make it to that stage.

“International was a very good team with solid hitters all around,” Redwood coach Ben Wang said via email. “Big pin hitters. Both teams played very well. The fourth game could have gone either way. I am very proud of the way the boys competed from beginning to end.”
