More than 100 family members, co-workers, and friends of the Eastpointe McDonald’s manager who was fatally stabbed last week turned out Monday evening to honor her dedication to her six children and her job.

Jennifer Harris, 39, a single mother of six, died July 10 after being stabbed multiple times by a disgruntled employee in a workplace attack.

Speakers at the vigil included franchise owner Yusef Alcodray, Eastpointe Mayor Michael Klinefelt, and Tenisia Evans, senior pastor at Divine Restoration Ministries in St. Clair Shores.

Alcodray said Harris, who worked for him for 15 years, was “more than a manager here, she was family.”

He is paying for her funeral service and working with Divine Restoration Ministries leadership to establish the Jennifer Harris Legacy Fund to support her children with basic life expenses, including food, housing, transportation and education.

“Not only am I contributing to the fund, but I will be leveraging every single person in my network to help raise the necessary resources to raise these children,” he told the crowd.

Mayor Klinefelt said he was impressed by the number of people who turned out to honor Harris’ memory.

“It’s a testament to Jennifer that this building is packed and the parking outside is full,” he said. “I think it speaks volumes to see the amount of people showing up in support of her.”

Still grieving, some of her children thanked the community for their support and recalled memories of Harris, who was known to her workforce as “Jamma.”

“These past couple of days, all I could think of was seeing my momma in her doing her job and then being attacked by someone she trusted,” said the woman’s oldest daughter, Antonia Griffin.

“It’s hard to stand right here and talk about her; this was never a thought, we never got to none of this, this was never even discussed — what would happen for when she was not here for us.”

Minutes later, the crowd ventured out into the parking lot where dozens of red and white balloons were released into the sky.

“Fly high, baby, fly high,” said Pastor Evans.

Hazel Johnson, Jennifer Harris’ mother, appreciated the community support.

“It’s really a blessing to see how much love she got from the community,” Johnson told The Macomb Daily. “Especially with all those balloons going to heaven.”

The suspect in Harris’ slaying, 26-year-old Afeni Badu Muhammad, has been charged with first-degree murder and other offenses, and is being held in the Macomb County Jail on a $25 million bond.

Investigators said Harris sent Muhammad home for not doing her job duties Thursday morning. Wearing a mask, Muhammad, returned to the McDonald’s on Nine Mile Road at Schroeder Avenue with a knife and stabbed Harris as many as 15 times, according to Eastpointe police.
