


The Marin Academy girls lacrosse team surged ahead at the end of the first quarter and rode the momentum toward a 16-8 victory over University to claim the Bay Counties League championship on Friday evening.
Steph Zola led the Wildcats (15-3) with five goals and 10 draw controls, while Reese Goodenough had four goals and nine draws. Elsa Anderson netted three goals. Cece Dickinson, Francesca Daniels, Sisley Cain and Sadie Goodenough rounded out the Wildcats’ scoring with one goal each.
“Overall it was a great game,” Marin Academy coach Cori Conner said. “The girls started off with a little bit of nervous energy but once they got in their groove … they never looked back.”
The Wildcats, ranked fourth in the North Coast Section, are looking for a home game to kick off the NCS playoffs next week.
Boys lacrosse
Marin Academy got off to a quick start and goalkeeper Matt McKane turned back a rally effort from Lick-Wilmerding as the Wildcats earned an 8-4 victory to claim the Bay Counties League championship on Friday.
McKane had 10 saves for the Wildcats (13-7), who got three goals from Fineas DeGooyer and two each from Josh Levitan and Tommy Winship. George Leary won 14 of 16 faceoffs.
Prep softball
Taylor Testa pitched seven solid innings as San Marin moved back into a first-place tie following a 6-4 victory against Marin Catholic on Friday night.
Testa allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out four. San Marin got two hits apiece from Arianna Mendoza, Savannah Reynolds, and Leah Cronin. The Mustangs (14-6, 9-3) are tied for first with Redwood (13-8, 9-3) and a half-game ahead of Archie Williams (16-5, 8-3). Redwood and Archie Williams play each other on Monday.
San Marin got two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI triple by Mendoza and an RBI single from Avery Bishop. Morgan Carlson had three of the six hits for MC (12-5, 7-4). Anna Held had two RBIs.
Prep baseball
Brody Daganais stole home in the bottom of the 11th as Terra Linda walked off with its first MCAL win of the season, 7-6 over Branson on Friday night.
TL (4-17, 1-13) needed a sac fly from Thomas Martinez and an RBI single from Hunter Fraser in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. The Trojans then needed a one-out single from Hayden Biesiadecki in the bottom of the ninth after Branson’s Treyvor Mathews hit a home run in the top of the frame.
Branson (8-13, 2-12) got big games from Thomas Lardner (four hits, two runs) and Mathews (three hits, three RBIs, two runs).
The top five hitters in Branson’s lineup all had two hits as the Bulls fell 8-7 against Berean Christian on Saturday. Cobe Benjamin and Grayson Roberts drove in two runs each for the Bulls (8-14).
• Sam Gersch, Jack Moseley, and Chase Johnson had run-scoring hits in the top of the seventh as Redwood rallied for a 4-3 win against Petaluma on Saturday. Gersch had three hits for the Giants (13-8-1).
• Gio Castaing and Trevor Cleary had two RBIs each to led Novato to a 7-1 victory over Sonoma Valley on Saturday. The Hornets (14-8) scored three runs in the second and four more in the fifth.
College baseball
Former San Marin High standout Josh Martin hit a go-ahead grand slam to lead Santa Rosa Junior College into the second round of the CCCAA playoffs following a 7-4 win in Game 2 against American River on Saturday.
The top-seeded Bear Cubs (40-1) have won 20 games in a row and advance to the Super Regionals on Friday.
• No. 15 College of Marin (28-14-1) also booked its passage into the Super Regionals thanks to an 8-6 win in Game 3 against Lassen on Friday. Former Novato High standout Derek Bartram hit a three-run homer in the first inning. Gilbert Roth (Archie Williams) added three hits, two RBIs, and two runs.
