WATSONVILLE

Hospital to hold overdose awareness event

Over 75% of drug overdose deaths involved an opioid, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and if the nasal spray naloxone (also known as Narcan) had been administered, there’s a high chance those overdoses could have been reversed. Watsonville Community Hospital will host an International Overdose Awareness Day event at Watsonville City Plaza, 358 Main St., to distribute Narcan and educate the public on how easy it is to use.

The event will begin at 3 p.m. Aug. 30 with a resource fair and community activities. Presentations will be held from 4-5 p.m.

Over 25 agencies and clinics who support substance use disorders will be on hand with lots of resources. In addition, attendees will hear accounts from overdose survivors and parents who have lost loved ones — all in an effort to help ensure other families won’t endure the pain of an overdose loss. Interactive activities to remember those lost to overdose and celebrate overdose survivors will also be available.
