The Maria Carrillo boys’ tennis season came to an end Saturday as the Pumas lost a heartbreaker in the North Coast Section championship matchup in Union City.
Carrillo, the No. 12 seed in Division 2, had pulled off three consecutive upsets in earlier rounds but ultimately fell to No. 7 Marin Academy 4-3 in a razor-tight battle that saw three matches go to deciding third sets.
Carrillo was the first local team to reach an NCS final since Justin-Siena won the Division 2 title back in 2010.
“We knew we were a good team coming into the playoffs,” Pumas head coach Daniel Henke said. “Skill set is not all of it, though; we knew we could come in with a strong mindset, and these guys are strong with their mindset and are strong individuals.”
Carrillo’s Edwin Jetleb churned out a three-set thriller at No. 4 singles. Jetleb had to come back from losing the first set before winning the next two 6-4, 7-5, and earning a vital point for the Pumas.
At No. 3 singles, Henry Nguyen split the first two sets 2-6, 6-4, before losing the third set 7-6 in a 7-2 tiebreaker.
Carrillo also found wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Leo Eiger and Liam Murray won 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 after falling behind 0-5 in the second set, while Matthew Lee and Alex Chiu won 7-5, 6-4 at the top doubles flight.
To get to Saturday afternoon’s final, the Pumas had to upset the division’s top seed and tournament host, James Logan High School, earlier in the day. Carrillo won three out of the four singles flights and two out of three doubles to complete the upset, 5-2. Three matches went to deciding sets in the semifinal round, too.
Nguyen, Jetleb and Alexander Yoon all picked up wins as the top three singles players. Yoon won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, Nguyen won 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2, and Jetleb won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) at No. 3.
Lee and Chiu won a 7-6 (3), 6-3 decision at No. 1 doubles, while Eiger and Murray won 6-3, 0-6 and 6-1.
“The biggest thing that I felt throughout the season was that we’re guys that grew up together,” Lee said. “We knew each other since we were 8, and as we played through middle school and high school, these became real friends that we now have.”
Carrillo ends the season as the North Bay League co-champion, in addition to the second-place NCS finish.
Yoon won the NBL singles title, while Nguyen and Jetleb claimed the league’s doubles crown.
