Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker had surgery to repair the meniscus in his left, non-kicking knee on Friday, though coach Andy Reid said following practice that the two-time defending Super Bowl champions hope to have him back later this season.

The Chiefs signed Spencer Shrader off the Jets practice squad to fill in for at least the next four weeks. In his only two games, he went 3 for 3 on PATs for Indianapolis against Houston and 2 for 2 on field goals for New York against Arizona.

The unbeaten Chiefs (9-0) head to Buffalo (8-2) in a pivotal showdown in the race for the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.

“He’s a young guy so his resume isn’t long, but the ones he’s done he’s done a good job with,” Reid said of Shrader, who kicked for South Florida and Notre Dame in college. “He’s got a very strong leg and he’s done well.”

Banged-up Falcons rule out 8 players >> The Atlanta Falcons will be missing eight players for their game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, including several starters on defense.

Cornerback Mike Hughes (neck) and nickel back Dee Alford (hamstring) were ruled out by the NFC South leaders on the Friday injury report, along with backup nickel Antonio Hamilton Sr. (pectoral).

Inside linebacker Troy Andersen (knee) is sidelined again after reaggravating an injury that already caused him to miss five games. Rookie backer JD Bertrand (concussion) will miss his third straight game.

Along the defensive line, Ta’Quon Graham (pectoral) and James Smith-Williams (tibia) were also ruled out. Both have played in all 10 games for the Falcons, with Smith-Williams making five starts.

Tight end Charlie Woerner (concussion) will be sidelined as well.

Seahawks center Williams retires >> Seattle Seahawks center Connor Williams has retired because of personal reasons, coach Mike Macdonald said on Friday.

The Seahawks coach said Williams’ departure did not have anything to do with the ACL injury he sustained last year that required surgery.

“We’re going to honor his wishes and keep all those reasons and conversations private for obvious reasons, and I wish them the best,” Macdonald said.

Williams, in his seventh NFL season, signed a one-year contract in August and started in every game this season.

The 27-year old had not taken part in practice this week. The Seahawks (4-5) visit the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Bills’ new stadium costs balloon to $2.1 billion >> The projected cost of the Buffalo Bills’ new stadium has ballooned to what team officials on Friday told The Associated Press is “north of $2.1 billion,” with owners Terry and Kim Pegula responsible for picking up the more than $560 million in overruns.

Bills president Pete Guelli said he was not surprised by the amount, given how the numbers have been tracking up since construction began 16 months ago. And he said the projected total represents the commitment the Pegulas have to the community because they are sticking to their vision for the facility without cutting corners to reduce costs.
