Teoscar Hernandez officially declined the Dodgers’ qualifying offer before Tuesday’s deadline.

The move was expected and does not affect the Dodgers’ ability to negotiate with the outfielder or sign him to a new contract. It does mean the Dodgers will receive draft-pick compensation if Hernandez signs with another team.

Hernandez signed with the Dodgers for one year and $23.5 million last winter. He is already drawing interest from multiple teams this year after hitting a career-high 33 home runs and driving in 99 runs while making the All-Star team and winning his third Silver Slugger award.

The qualifying offer this year is a one-year, $21.05 million contract. Of 13 players extended the offer, only Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Martinez accepted.

Tuesday was also the deadline for teams to add players to their 40-man roster and protect them from next month’s Rule 5 draft. The Dodgers added just one player, left-handed reliever Jack Dreyer.

Dreyer, 25, was undrafted out of the University of Iowa after an injury-riddled college career. The son of former major leaguer Steve Dreyer (18 games with the Texas Rangers in 1993 and 1994), Jack Dreyer missed all of 2021 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and made his professional debut with 12 games in the Arizona Complex League in 2022.

He spent 2023 with Class-A Great Lakes then moved up through Double-A to Triple-A this past season, going a combined 5-2 with a 2.20 ERA, 72 strikeouts and 12 walks in 57 2/3 innings.

SOCCER

Gerardo “Tata” Martino, who guided Inter Miami to the best regular season record in Major League Soccer history this season, is resigning as coach of the club, multiple sources reported.

Martino — who was hired in July 2023, right around the time that Lionel Messi debuted for the club — made the decision for personal reasons, reports said.

There are tentative plans for a Friday news conference with Martino and team officials. Inter Miami was eliminated in the first round of this year’s MLS Cup playoffs, and won’t gather for training camp to start the 2025 season until January.

Martino, 61 — who coached Messi with Barcelona and Argentina’s national team before reuniting with him in South Florida — gave no outward indication that he was thinking about leaving when the season ended earlier this month.

Inter Miami was 26-9-12 in MLS regular season matches in the Martino era, plus won its first two trophies: the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the Supporters Shield as the best MLS regular season team this year.

Martino agreed to a deal with Inter Miami in June 2023, then debuted with the club the following month. His hiring was one in a series of major moves for the club — along with the signings of, among others, Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez.

Martino coached Atlanta United to an MLS championship in 2018, winning the league’s coach of the year award that season. This year, even with Messi missing basically half the MLS season because of injuries and commitments to Argentina’s national team, Martino led Inter Miami to a level of regular season success never seen in the league’s history.

Inter Miami finished with 74 points, one more than New England had in its record-setting season in 2021. At 22-4-8 in league play, Inter Miami finished the season with a .765 winning percentage for another MLS record. Inter Miami also became the eighth team in MLS history to get through a regular season with only four losses, tying another record.

WINTER SPORTS

The new action-sports league being launched by Shaun White will air on NBC and stream on Peacock beginning next year.

White announced earlier this year that he was putting together The Snow League, a four-stop circuit that will feature halfpipe snowboarding and freeskiing. On Tuesday, the league and NBC revealed that the first event is set for March 7-8 in Aspen, with the rest of the schedule still to be announced.

White plans on getting 20 men and 16 women in each contest for a prize pool of more than $1.5 million over the first season.

The debut in Aspen will come 11 months before the start of the Winter Olympics in Italy, also set to be carried by NBC and its streaming service, Peacock.

White, a three-time Olympic gold medalist who retired after the 2022 Games in Beijing, said a key reason for starting the league was to bring together the world’s top action-sports stars, who often divide time between a number of circuits, including the Dew Tour and stops on the Grand Prix and X Games tours.

“In the end, we really want to be that premier thing, where it’s amazing to go to the Olympics and win a medal, but this is like winning Wimbledon or the NBA finals. It’s almost more prestigious,” White said.

TENNIS

Slovakia rallied to beat Britain 2-1 and reach its first Billie Jean King Cup final in more than two decades.

Viktoria Hruncakova and Tereza Mihalikova defeated Olivia Nicholls and Heather Watson 6-2, 6-2 in the decisive doubles match in Malaga, Spain, putting Slovakia back in the final for the first time since 2002 to face last year’s runner-up Italy today.

“Absolutely special moment for our country, for our players, for tennis in Slovakia,” captain Matej Liptak said. “It’s so many years when we won it once only. But today it’s really real, and we are just one step from the maybe biggest victory of our team or team members. We will try to enjoy it.”

Britain was trying to reach the final of the women’s team event for the first time in more than four decades.

“We’re all absolutely gutted,” Britain team captain Anne Keothavong said. “We came into this event really believing that we had a good shot at it and unfortunately we fell short.”

Slovakia forced the deciding match after Rebecca Sramkova rallied to beat Katie Boulter 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second singles match.

Britain had taken the lead when Emma Raducanu defeated Hruncakova 6-4, 6-4 in the first singles.

Britain last reached the semifinals in 2022, when it lost to Australia.

Slovakia was playing in the semifinals for the first time since 2013. Before that it had made it to the last-four in 2002 when it won the title in a final against Spain.

Slovakia upset 18-time champion United States in the first round and defeated Australia in the quarterfinals. Britain picked up 2-0 wins against Germany and defending champions Canada in the last-eight.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Hunter Dickinson had 15 points and 15 rebounds, Dajuan Harris Jr. scored 16 points, and No. 1 Kansas shrugged off a sluggish start to beat visiting UNC Wilmington 84-66 and give Jayhawks coach Bill Self his 800th career win. The Jayhawks are 5-0, the Seahawks are 4-1.

NO. 15 MARQUETTE 76, No. 6 PURDUE 58: Kam Jones had 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists as host Marquette (5-0) snapped the Boilermakers’ 39-game regular-season nonconference winning streak. Purdue (4-1) hadn’t lost a regular-season nonconference game since falling 58-54 at Miami on Dec. 8, 2020, compiling the fourth-longest such streak in NCAA history.
