The Gophers secondary was shorthanded against Iowa on Saturday night at Huntington Bank Stadium.

Top Minnesota cornerback Justin Walley and starting safety Aidan Gousby were ruled out, according to the U’s unavailable list posted two hours before the 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

Walley injured his right knee toward the beginning of the 27-0 win over Nevada last week, while Gousby was favoring his arm after a collision late in against the Wolf Pack.

Walley has not missed a game in his four-year collegiate career, while Gousby is seeing his first extended playing time this season. The third-year safety is second on the team with 138 snaps.

Za’Quan Bryan started in place of Walley; the redshirt freshman had played 71 snaps through three games, including early against North Carolina in the season opener.

Nickleback Jai’Onte’ McMillan also played wide cornerback in the first half Saturday.

Without Gousby, the Gophers’ starting safeties were Coleman Bryson and Darius Green. Also in the mix was Kerry Brown, who had two interceptions against Nevada last week. True freshman Koi Perich took on a bigger role in the secondary during Saturday’s first quarter.

Both Gousby and Walley have an interception on the season. Walley has eight tackles and Gousby six.

The Gophers listed five other players out: tight end Pierce Walsh, defensive linemen Theorin Randle and Jaylin Hicks, running back Kadean Johnson and defensive back Jordan Greenhow. Defensive lineman Logan Richter was deemed questionable.

Shutout streak ends

The Hawkeyes scored a first-quarter touchdown on a 1-yard run by Caleb Johnson which ended the Gophers’ shutout streak at 128 minutes and 41 seconds since the fourth quarter of this season opener against North Carolina on Aug. 29.

The 48-0 blanking of Rhode Island and 27-0 shutdown of Nevada gave the Gophers their first season with multiple shutouts since 2006.
