The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after an early-morning fire Thursday left a Mount Clemens homeless.
Delvon Lee, who was renting the house on Eldredge Street, north of Cass Avenue, believes the fire was intentionally caused by someone he knows using illegal fireworks, namely an M-80, according to a broadcast report.
Lee’s girlfriend and her sister thought someone had broken into the house because the explosive made such a loud sound.
“I had my baby upstairs — when we were coming down I got him and the fire is just big,” Lee told WJBK-TV (Fox 2 Detroit). “The smoke is pushing through the house. From the inside coming down the stairs you just see the whole — all that is just lit up.”
Mount Clemens firefighters responded to the burning home about 3:30 a.m. They were able prevent the blaze from spreading to other residences, but the flames and smoke badly damaged the interior and all of the family’s belongings.
In addition to five other family members, there were two 9-month-old babies also inside at the time.
No injuries were reported.
“We all could’ve died. I’m just glad that we all got out safe, all the grandbabies and kids,” Michelle Wilson said to the TV station. “All her baby stuff that she just got for the baby is all gone. We got no car seats.”
According to Lee, the property owner has homeowners insurance, but he doesn’t have renter’s insurance to cover his losses. The family met with representatives from the American Red Cross, which is expected to pay for their immediate lodging.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and searching for community resources to help the family.
