



The Colorado Avalanche has addressed a significant need six days ahead of the NHL trade deadline.
Colorado is adding defenseman Ryan Lindgren, who played collegiately for the Golden Gophers, along with depth forward Jimmy Vesey and prospect Hank Kempf in a deal with the New York Rangers for Calvin de Haan, Juuso Parssinen, plus second- and fourth-round picks in the 2025 NHL draft.
The 27-year-old Lindgren, is a left-handed defenseman who has been a regular for the Rangers the past six seasons. Listed at 6-feet and 194 pounds, he is a defense-first defenseman who’s spent a lot of time in New York’s top four, averaging between 18:50 and 20:06 of ice time per game over the past five seasons.
Lindgren, a Twin Cities native, has spent a lot of time playing next to star Rangers defenseman Adam Fox on New York’s top pairing.
The Gophers alumnus signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract before this season. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent in July. The Rangers are retaining half of Lindgren’s cap hit.
Marchand leaves game with upper-body injury
Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand left his team’s game at Pittsburgh in the first period with an upper-body injury.
Marchand departed after a hit by Penguins defenseman P.O Joseph at 5:56. Joseph drove Marchand into the corner and the side of his head struck the boards.
Marchand was attended to by a trainer for several minutes before he was helped from the ice.
Later in the period, Joseph took a hit in the corner from Bruins forward Mark Kastelic and left with an upper-body injury.
Marchand has 21 goals and 26 assists in 61 games in his 16th season with the Bruins.
Ovechkin nets 84th goal, now 10 behind Gretzky
Alex Ovechkin scored the 884th goal of his NHL career to move 10 away from tying Wayne Gretzky’s record.
The Washington Capitals captain beat fellow Russian Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning with four minutes left in the third period.
Ovechkin’s 31st goal of the season is his 12th in 22 games against Vasilevskiy.
Blackhawks trade Jones to Panthers
The defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers have acquired defenseman Seth Jones in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Florida got Jones and a 2026 fourth-round pick from Chicago for goaltender Spencer Knight and a conditional first-round pick in next year’s draft.
The Blackhawks also are retaining 26% of Jones’ salary.

Sabonis leaves game with hamstring injury
Sacramento’s Domantas Sabonis left the Kings’ game against the Houston Rockets early in the first quarter with a hamstring injury and the team said he wouldn’t return.
Sabonis was running down the court about a minute into the game when he pulled up and grabbed his left hamstring.
Sabonis entered the game averaging 19.9 points, 14.4 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game.
College hockey
Gophers claim share of Big Ten championship
A 5-3 win at No. 15 Penn State earned the No. 2 Minnesota men’s hockey team a share of the Big Ten regular season championship.
The Gophers (24-8-4, 15-6-3 Big Ten) will split the conference regular-season title with Michigan State. The Spartans wil get the top seed for the Big Ten Tournament, with Minnesota taking the second seed.
Penn State (18-12-4, 9-11-4) opened the scoring and was tied 3-all with the Gophers before Mike Koster put the visitors ahead for good on a power-play goal at 16:56 of the third. Oliver Wood clinched the victory with an empty-net goal at 19:35.
Matthew Wood scored twice for Minnesota, with Mason Nevers and Jimmy Snuggerud adding one goal apiece. Goalie Liam Souliere made 30 saves in the win.
Season concludes for St. Thomas women
The season ended for the St. Thomas women’s hockey team in a 4-1 loss to No. 2-ranked Ohio State in the WCHA playoffs.
Maddie Jurgensen logged the final goal of the season for the Tommies with a third-period score.
However, it was not enough as Ohio State (27-6-3, 19-6-3 WCHA) scored three goals in the opening frame and one more in the second.
St. Thomas (9-25-2, 6-21-1) had lost the WCHA playoff opener on Friday.
Tommies men top Michigan Tech
Lucas Wahlin’s goal midway through the third period sent the St. Thomas men’s hockey team to a 2-1 win over Michigan Tech.
The Tommies (16-13-5, 13-9-4 CCHA) took a 1-0 lead in the opening period before the Huskies (16-15-3, 12-11-3) knotted the score early in the final frame.
St. Thomas goaltender Jake Sibell made 29 saves.

Commanders trade for Samuel from 49ers
The Washington Commanders have acquired wide receiver Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers for a fifth-round pick, pending a physical, according to a person with knowledge of the trade.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the trade cannot be official until the start of the new league year on March 12.
Samuel, who turned 29 last month, had 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns last season with the 49ers.
The South Carolina product has 334 receptions for 4,792 yards and 22 TDs since making his debut for the 49ers in 2019
The 49ers last month gave Samuel and his agent permission to seek a trade.
San Francisco entertained offers for Samuel last offseason but didn’t have any good enough to make a trade. General manager John Lynch said after the season that the Niners weren’t looking to trade Samuel, who was an All-Pro in 2021 before his production dropped off.
