What high triglycerides mean

Triglycerides, the main kind of fat in your body, store extra energy from the food you eat.

“It’s like a little battery used for energy,” said Mayo Clinic cardiologist Regis Fernandes. “But too many triglycerides can also cause heart disease.”

People who are overweight, in general, have high triglyceride levels and good cholesterol levels that are low.

Dr. Fernandes recommends these tips to lower triglyceride levels.

• Aim for 30 minutes of exercise most days.

• Cut sugar and refined carbs.

• Focus on reducing calories.

• Choose healthier fats like olive oil and fish.

• Limit alcohol.
