The top-rated high school basketball recruit in the state of Minnesota in the 2026 class is headed to Iowa State.

Wayzata shooting guard Christian Wiggins announced his commitment to the Cyclones on Saturday. The rangy 6-foot-4 player is considered a four-star recruit and a top 70 player in the nation, according to 247Sports.

Wiggins received a scholarship offer from Iowa State in May 2024, but no offer from the Gophers until March 30 after Niko Medved became head coach. It was Medved’s first in-state offer after being hired away from Colorado State on March 24.

Iowa, Creighton, Wisconsin and Northern Iowa also offered scholarships.

Wiggins was visiting Ames, Iowa, this weekend.

Wiggins led Wayzata over Cretin-Derham Hall for the Class 4A boys basketball championship on March 22. He scored 21 points in the title game. He also plays AAU basketball for D1 Minnesota.

Gophers golfers 17th at Big Ten Championships

Mariana Mesones leads the Gophers women’s golf team, sitting in a tie for 17th place after day two of the Big Ten Championships in Havre de Grace, Md.

The Peru native fired a 3-under 69 and recorded six birdies in her second round.

As a team, the Gophers shot an even-par 288 to move up the leaderboard four spots to sit tied for 12th place. Minnesota heads into the final round at 19-over par (307–288).

Michigan State leads the team competition at 3-under par (292–281).

Rowers win twice at Big Ten Invitational

The Third Varsity Four crew of Shelby Kaplan (cox), Viktoria Lapikof, Jackie Wethington, Marina Filas, Haley Campain earned another win for the Golden Gophers rowing team at the Big Ten Invitational in Sarasota, Fla.

The Second Novice Eight of Lily Knopp (cox), Erika Schick, Gabby Pertzborn, Lexie Wyman, Ashley Harvey, Sara Pfeiffer, Elsie Belina, Maddie Mockenhaupt, McCall Motz was victorious in the regatta’s final race.

Saints lose 1-0 at Iowa in Lopez rehab start

The Saints lost 1-0 to Iowa in Pablo Lopez’s rehab start in Des Moines, Ia.

Iowa’s Owen Caissie logged the lone run of the game on a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning off Lopez.

The Twins’ ace, who is rehabbing a hamstring injury, went 4 2/3 innings with the Triple-A affiliate, allowing three hits while striking out four with no walks.

Saints batters managed just five hits total off I-Cubs starter Chris Flexen and three relievers.

Team USA advances to Worlds gold medal game

Behind goals from Laila Edwards and Plymouth’s Kelly Pannek, the U.S. Women’s National Team topped Czechia, 2-1, to advance to the gold medal game of the 2025 IIHF Women’s World Championship.

The U.S. will face Canada in the title round, a rematch of a preliminary round game won 2-1 by the U.S. on April 11.

The signed forwards Anastasiia Olairi Kosu and Dalayah Daniels. The terms of the deals were not released.

Greg Cronin has been fired as coach of the Anaheim Ducks after two seasons.

The Ducks missed the playoffs for the seventh straight season, finishing 35-37-10. Their 80 points were a 21-point improvement over last year. Cronin posted a 62-87-15 record in two seasons.

Two-way star Shohei Ohtani is now a father.

The Los Angeles Dodgers slugger’s wife gave birth to a girl, manager Dave Roberts said on the telecast of LA’s game at the Texas Rangers.

Roberts was hopeful Ohtani would rejoin the club for the series finale Sunday.

Diamondbacks closer Puk goes on injured list

A.J. Puk was put on the 15-day injured list by the Arizona Diamondbacks with left elbow inflammation.

Puk, who had Tommy John surgery in 2018, has four saves in eight games with Arizona this season, going 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA.

Hendriks back in majors for first time since 2023

The Boston Red Sox activated relief pitcher Liam Hendriks, ending his 680 days away from MLB.

Hendriks was diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 2022. The three-time All-Star returned to the Chicago White Sox on May 29, 2023.

He made five appearances, before going on the injured list with right elbow inflammation and had Tommy John surgery that Aug. 2.

Missouri State safety McGee dies at 21

Missouri State University safety Todric McGee died at a hospital from injuries he sustained Friday at his home.

McGee, 21, was entering his fifth season with the MSU football program and was the Bears’ starting safety in 2023 and 2024.

Local authorities are investigating the details of his death, according to the university.
