Local cyclist Bjorn Riley is becoming a household name in the world of professional mountain biking, furthering his global status in the sport with a pair of wins at the Mountain Bike World Cup in Les Gets, France, last weekend.

The 2020 Boulder High alum won the men’s under-age-23 short track and cross-country Olympic-distance races, keeping him in second place in both events as part of the U23 World Cup season standings. He trails only national teammate Riley Amos, who he beat in the short-track race a month ago at the World Cup in Val di Sole, Italy.

A member of Trek Future Racing, Riley will next race at the elite national championship in Pennsylvania July 17-21, then at the U23 world championship in Pal Arinsal, Andorra, starting in late August. Once the U23 season ends, he said he’ll pick his next pro team as he moves fully into the men’s elite bracket.

“Right now, it’s kind of full gas on training for worlds,” said Riley, who returned to Boulder for the first time in two years this past week. He trains half the year in Austria and the other half in Spain. “And next year for me, I’ll be with a new team and the first year in (the elite bracket).”

In France, Riley won the cross-country Olympic-distance race in 1 hour, 12.33 seconds — beating runner-up Luca Martin (France) by 1:17. In the short-track race, he won in 22:08, three seconds ahead of Switzerland’s Finn Treudler.

“It was for sure my biggest weekend so far,” Riley said. “It was pretty perfect for me. Getting the double (win) was super, super sick. The venue was sick. The crowd was cool.”

Madigan Munro, who was part of the Boulder High School mountain biking team with Riley, finished 11th in the women’s Olympic-distance race and 13th in the short-track race. She is third in both the women’s U23 short-track and Olympic-distance season standings.
