Take historical walking tour of Arana Gulch

Have you ever wondered about the history of Arana Gulch? Join Dan Model, Eastside neighborhood historian, at 10 a.m. July 19 for a historical walking tour of the Arana Gulch greenbelt. Learn about everything from the first Mexican settlers to the story behind the Ghost of the Gulch.

The tour will meet at the Agnes Street entrance to the gulch and will walk on pavement and dirt trails, some of which may not be suitable for those with mobility issues. Wear suitable footwear and bring water and sunscreen. The tour is free of charge, but reservations are required. Contact drmodel99@gmail.com to reserve a spot.

Erik’s Deli to host scholarship fundraiser

Join the San Jose State University Alumni Association Santa Cruz in supporting their scholarship program for Santa Cruz area students to attend SJSU by purchasing food and drink at Erik’s Deli, 1664 Soquel Drive, July 20. Store owner Greg Newman is a proud SJSU alum of the hospitality management program.

The Santa Cruz chapter supports local students attending the university through renewable scholarships. Seventeen students from Santa Cruz County high schools and Cabrillo College are currently funded, with five to six new awards given annually. Proceeds from fundraisers and a portion of memberships go directly to the scholarship program, which boasts over a 90% graduation rate. Soroptimist Club set to meet

The Soroptimist International of Capitola-by-the-Sea will hold its club meeting July 8 at 4 p.m. at United Way of Santa Cruz County, 4450 Capitola Road, Suite 106. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Club members will present and vote on fundraising activities for the new 2025-26 fiscal year and select leaders for the club’s four pillars, including membership, fundraising, programs and public awareness.

Soroptimist International of Capitola-by-the-Sea is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. Event honors Hawaiian princes who brought surfing to SC

The Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History is excited to announce The Princes of Surf Paddle Out, July 19, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Main Beach at 400 Beach St., to honor the exact day 140 years ago on July 19, 1885, that three Hawaiian princes surfed the San Lorenzo Rivermouth and introduced surfing to the mainland.

This event is free to the public and will begin with a short ceremony followed by a community paddle out that will recreate the story of David Kawananakoa, Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole and Edward Keliiahonui, as they lowered shaped boards made from local redwood slabs into the San Lorenzo Rivermouth and brought surfing to the U.S. This event coincides with the opening of the exhibition Princes of Surf 2025: He?e Nalu Santa Cruz, running July 18 to Jan. 4, 2026, in the MAH’s Solari Gallery. Homeless Garden Project to host benefit dinner

The Homeless Garden Project will be hosting the Sustain Supper, a farm to table dinner that benefits the Project’s employment and training programs for individuals experiencing homelessness. The supper will be held July 19, from 4-7:30 p.m., on the Homeless Garden Project’s organic farm, located at Delaware Avenue and Shaffer Road. Chef Katie Reicher of Greens Restaurant in San Francisco, will prepare the gourmet meal using produce from the farm.

Attendees will also enjoy a farm tour, drinks (including special wine pairings) and live music by trio the Quail Hollow Drifters. An engaging keynote about sustainability will be given by Manjula Martin, author of “The Last Fire Season.” Tickets are $195, with proceeds supporting the Homeless Garden Project’s programs. Hot Rods on the Green car show returns

Come have fun checking out classic and custom cars from around Santa Cruz County and beyond at the 18th annual Hot Rods on the Green classic car show happening July 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Twin Lakes Church, 2701 Cabrillo College Drive. There will be vintage, customs, classics, muscle cars, Camaros, hot rods, street rods, modern muscle cars, trucks, VWs, dragsters, motorcycles and more. Registration is $35, open now until the day of the car show.

A fun event for the whole family, featuring a live DJ, kids activities, food vendors, a hula hoop contest, a Red Cross blood drive, awards and a raffle.
