Praise for President Joe Biden from Southern California Democrats rolled in Sunday after the president said he would step aside from his reelection bid.

“Joe Biden has accomplished more as president than most presidents in recent memory,” said Rep. Lou Correa, an Orange County Democrat who had defended the president against earlier calls to drop out of the race. “I remain a Biden fan and will always support you.”

The president has for weeks faced growing calls to withdraw from the presidential campaign. Biden, 81, ignited mounting concern about his age and mental competency following a disastrous presidential debate performance June 27.

“President Biden has been an extraordinary, history-making president — a leader who has fought hard for working people and delivered astonishing results for all Americans,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. “He will go down in history as one of the most impactful and selfless presidents.”

“President Biden will go down in history as one of the best presidents of our great country,” Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, said on social media. Biden “took a nation hurt by the pandemic and turned our country around, ushering in massive job growth, infrastructure and a clean energy and tech revolution. Thank you, Mr. President.”

“President Joe Biden has been one of the most consequential presidents in American history. I’m proud to have worked so closely with his administration on so many of these historic achievements,” said Rep. Nanette D. Barragán, D-South Gate.

Biden also said Sunday that he is throwing his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic Party’s nominee.

Democrats, Barragán said, will support Harris “as the party moves forward, unified, in our efforts to put the American people over politics.” Lieu also praised Harris, saying she will win in November.

For Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks, Biden’s action Sunday was a stunning coda to three weeks of seismic political headlines.

“To go through a few weeks in which you had that bad debate, the awful assassination attempt, the Republican convention, now you have a president withdrawing from the race, it’s hard to pick a three weeks that have been that intense from a political perspective,” he said.

What was clear as Sunday drew on was that Democrats were rallying behind the move, which Sherman characterized as heroic and patriotic.

“The best thing he could do was hand off the baton. He did what was best for the country rather than what’s best for himself,” Sherman said. “I think we’re all convinced that Biden made the decision that was best for the country and for our party, and that we have a better chance of winning today than we did yesterday.”

He also acknowledged that Harris — a constituent in his own 32nd Congressional District when she’s at her L.A. home and not in Washington — is well-positioned to lead the ticket. He noted Biden’s own endorsement of her, which he had shortly followed with his own.

“President Biden’s decision is incredibly patriotic and the right thing to do,” said Rep. Mike Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, who had publicly called on Biden to drop out.

“I want to thank President Biden for his decades of public service to our country and his historic presidency,” Levin continued. “He has led our country with unwavering courage, conviction and strength. Our nation, and the entire free world, is better off because of his leadership. Now, we must come together to prevail against the incalculable threat Donald Trump poses to the American institutions of freedom and democracy.”

But Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Escondido, tied Harris to his criticism of the Biden administration.

“We’ve had 4 years of Democratic chaos — at the border, in business, overseas, in our schools and on our streets,” Issa said on social media. “Joe Biden, Kamala Harris led all of it.”

Here are some other reactions from local leaders:

• Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena: “(Vice President) Harris fights for us all. She leads the fight to restore our reproductive freedoms. She stood up for us to fight anti-Asian hate. When a gunman killed 11 people in my hometown of Monterey Park, she was there to support us. I’m proud to endorse (Harris) for President!”

• Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Long Beach: “It’s been an honor to support (Biden) and (Harris) from day one. Now we must unite around our vice president and defeat Donald Trump. I’m all in, are you? Let’s go!”

• Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Los Angeles: “As he has done throughout his public service career, President Biden is once again prioritizing the American people and doing all possible to secure the strongest, brightest and most stable future for our nation. With heart and humility, the president has used his time in the White House to usher in transformative change.”

• Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, D-Los Angeles: “I must start by saying thank you, President Biden, for your tremendous track record of selflessly serving the American people over five decades in public office. For leading with empathy and integrity and for working to forge a nation that lives up to its founding ideals of liberty, equality, and justice for all. America is better because of your courageous leadership.”

• Rep. Katie Porter, D-Irvine: “President Biden’s service has bettered the lives of millions of Americans, delivering long overdue action on drug prices, climate, infrastructure, and more. Now as we move forward, I hope we will have a process that energizes the electorate to set us up for victory in November. I look forward to Vice President Harris making her case to voters, and I will support our nominee however I can so we keep the White House.”

Rep. Linda Sánchez, D-Whittier: “I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to President Biden for his decades of service to our country. Throughout his career, he exemplified leadership, integrity and an unwavering commitment to justice and equality. During his term, we have made historic advancements in combating climate change, rebuilding our economy and infrastructure, and uplifting millions of Americans, particularly working-class families and communities of color. He will leave office and public service with a legacy of progressive accomplishments that few presidents can rival in modern history.”

• Rep. Mark Takano, D-Riverside: “Joe Biden ran in 2020 to save our democracy. He has rebuilt our economy, expanded services to veterans, protected marriage rights, and stood up for freedom around the world. Thank you, Mr. President. It’s time to unite behind Kamala Harris. We can and will win in November.”

• Rep. Norma Torres, D-Ontario: “Joe Biden is an American patriot who dedicated his life to serving our nation. From historic investments into our nation’s infrastructure to lowering the cost of prescription drugs and bringing manufacturing back to the United States, Joe Biden has delivered more for the American people than many of his critics thought possible. He will go down in history as a stalwart defender of working families and an extraordinary president. I am proud to have been a vocal supporter of the president.”

• Senate President Pro Tem Mike McGuire, D-North Coast: “President Biden has led our nation with incredible skill, heart, and determination. His presidency has implemented generational change. Through his leadership, America’s economy is back from the abyss, he’s created a record number of jobs for working families, he’s reinvested in rural America, doubled the stock market, stood strong for reproductive rights and, because of his steady hand, America is back as a beacon of hope for the rest of the world. His leadership has been nothing short of tremendous, especially coming out of a global pandemic. California is deeply grateful for his tireless dedication to this nation we all love to call home.”

• State Sen. Dave Min, D-Irivne: “I am grateful to President Biden for his decades of service to our country. The impacts of his life’s work, including his term as president, will be felt for generations to come. I am sure his decision to step aside was not an easy one, but it is one that is characteristic of his history of serving the public good. We must defeat Donald Trump and his radical agenda to ban abortion and overthrow our democracy, as well as the MAGA extremists who would promote this agenda, including my opponent Scott Baugh.”

• State Sen. Tom Umberg, D-Santa Ana: “I can only imagine this has been an incredibly difficult decision for President Biden and his family. It was an honor and privilege to work with then-Sen. Biden when I served in the Clinton White House. President Biden has been an extraordinary president. It is the ultimate demonstration of patriotism to step away from power.”

• Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson: Thank you, President (Biden), for your leadership. Your administration has made our country stronger as well as Long Beach and cities across the nation. Let’s get ready to stand behind our new nominee for November — the fight for our democracy is only just getting started.”

• Los Angeles County Democratic Party Chair Mark Ramos: “Incredible leadership and steadfast moral character are how I describe President Joe Biden. His policies and legislative victories guided us through a dark time in our history and laid the foundation for returning manufacturing jobs to our country. His presidency was the steady hand we needed to prepare our country for a prosperous future and a better tomorrow for working people in America. Now, we must continue carrying forward his legacy into a new chapter of leadership for the Democratic party and America.”

• Republican Party of Orange County: “Joe Biden has endorsed Kamala Harris. The truth is there is no daylight between Biden and Harris. As vice president, she is just as responsible for the failed administration and the policies that have crushed Americans as Joe is. Even worse, she lied to the American people every day that he was capable of serving as president. As Californians we know the damage Kamala Harris has done to our state and our nation: out-of-control inflation, rampant crime and a border crisis. She has failed up her entire career and has no place failing up to the highest office in the land. Every American will pay the consequences of a President Harris.”

• California Republican Party Chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson: “It’s hard to believe it’s possible for Democrats to fall further into disarray, but here we are. Going forward, Democrats will have to grapple with two questions: if Joe Biden is unfit to serve four more years, is he fit to serve the remainder of his term? And is disastrous California Democrat Kamala Harris, who enabled a clearly declining Biden during his time as president, really the best backup option? President Biden tasked her with solving the border crisis, and in turn, she made our country less safe, allowing millions more to flood into our country illegally. As California’s top cop, she allowed criminals to thrive, including refusing to stop Prop. 47 that still wreaks havoc on our state today. Just as she failed on behalf of the Golden State, something Californians remember all too well, Harris owns the failed Biden-Harris agenda that led to rising prices, a weakened global standing, failing schools and surging crime. Republicans are united behind President Trump and will be ready for whoever the Democrats decide is their best bad option to support.”
