OAKLAND — After months of uncertainty, Monique Billings is ready for something simple again.

Basketball.

Following months of questions about whether the WNBA season would be delayed by a labor dispute, the league and the players union came to an agreement on Wednesday morning.

For Billings, that means the wait is over, the questions have quieted and the focus has finally shifted to the upcoming season for the energetic center who helped the Valkyries to a playoff berth last season.

Speaking at a community clean-up event at Sankofa Elementary School in North Oakland, Billings told the Bay Area News Group that the league’s newly finalized CBA brings a sense of relief after a tense offseason.

“I’m locked in,” Billings said. “I’m excited to see how everything is going to unfold and excited that we’re going to have a season.”

As Billings enters unrestricted free agency, the defensive-minded player said she’s prioritizing the right fit. She said she hopes to be back with the Valkyries, but is looking forward to exploring what free agency has in store.

“I’m just gonna approach (free agency) like I have any other year with a business mindset,” Billings said. “Having opportunities and a solidified role, and knowing what that role is, will be the biggest thing.”

Across 26 games played last year, Billings averaged 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 47.7% from the field. She quickly became a fan favorite for her spirited play off the bench.

In the Valkyries’ season- ending loss to the Minnesota Lynx in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series, Billings was vital as she stepped in for injured starting center Temi Fagbenle and scored a team-high 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

Billings is among Golden State’s unrestricted free agents, along with Fagbenle, guard Tiffany Hayes and forward Kayla Thornton.

Billings, who turns 30 in early May, became the Valkyries’ first signing after being selected as an unrestricted free agent in last year’s expansion draft. According to Spotrac, Billings made $110,000 last season and will get a pay bump after the new CBA made the average player’s salary more than $500,000.

The veteran big has been keeping busy during the offseason, playing for Hive BC in the Unrivaled 3-on-3 league and participating in the World Cup qualifiers for Team USA along with women’s basketball superstar Caitlin Clark.

“I’ve been focusing a lot on my consistency,” Billings said of her offseason. “Consistency in my shot making, being a great vet — I think that’s really important in my stage of my career along with playing with a lot of confidence.”

With free agency and a new season on the horizon, Billings said she’s carrying both momentum and perspective into what comes next.

Now, as the next chapter approaches, Billings isn’t overcomplicating it.

She’s just ready to play.“I’m really excited to be going into my ninth season,” Billings said. “It’s a privilege and an opportunity and I don’t want to take it for granted.”
